Creative Haven Sea Life Wonders Coloring Book: Amazing Designs on a Dramatic Black Background (Adult Coloring Books: Sea Life)

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.  I own a few of Lindsey Boylan's Creative Haven coloring books. She is one of the first in this line to have designs with black printed backgrounds. By doing this, the colors you use “pop” off the page against the dark color. I find that I like to use bright colors, even neon, as well as pastel to get the most contrast I can with the black.The designs are complex with detailed elements. In some cases, I think I will need to use smaller nib pens to color in the smaller spaces. My preference with this type of background is to use pens or markers as my colored pencils can leave lighter marks on the black if I happen to color over the edge. I've found that the wetter mediums are more forgiving if I cross into the black background.There are a wide range of sea creatures and plants – with the doodle style elements that allow me to experiment with color and have fun “creating” my own vision of sea life.This is what I saw while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium:31 Sea Life designs including above and below the oceanThe designs are printed one side of the pagePaper is the usual Creative Haven quality: white (though printed with a black background), medium weight, slightly smooth and has perforated pages.Glue Binding but with perforated pages so removing a page is fairly simple.The designs cross slightly over the perforations (nothing essential lost if you remove the pages from the book)Alcohol-based markers bleed through this paperWater-based markers bleed through in spots and show colorful shadows on the back of the pageGel pens and India ink pens leave shadows of color on the back of the page. India ink pens can bleed through when I apply more than one layer of ink.Coloring pencils work well with this paper. I was able to get good color, layer the same color and multiple colors and blend easily using a pencil style blender. I tested both oil and wax-based pencils with similar results. Hard lead pencils, like Verithins, leave dents on the back of the page.I suggest either removing pages from the book to color or using a blotter page under your working page. I like card stock as it keeps ink from seeping through and damaging the pages below.

I love adult coloring and have been an avid colorist for years and because I'm not very good at backgrounds, this book is really good for me. It has a nice black background and the images are really cool and fun to color, especially when you use bright, bold colors and glittery or metallic gel pens! The one thing I don't really like is the paper quality and it drains your markers. I own lots and lots of Creative Haven Coloring Books and honestly, the black background ones are my absolute fave and I have a few copies of each of them because I enjoy them so much, I just wish they would improve the paper quality and make sure the background is black and not washed out. Please make improvements - we, adult colorists would appreciate it and would likely pay more.

Each page of this coloring book has many different types of items to color and I found myself coloring each page with many different types of colored pencils.I included a picture that I colored from this book. The clouds, stars, and sea bubbles; I colored with Marco Raffine Metallic pencils. I colored the whale with Prismacolor Soft Core and the detail on the whale's belly was colored with Prismacolor Verithins. And the waves were colored with Marco Renoir on the left and Marco Raffine on the right.This is my first black background coloring book and I absolutely love it and got totally absorbed in coloring the sea life in this book.I really love this artist (Lindsey Boylan) and I am really looking forward to getting her next book, "Midnight Safari" which will be out in August.

I love Creative Haven adult coloring books & this one doesn't disappoint! The black backgrounds really come to life & make the picture even more special than the white backgrounds. Plenty of different undersea creatures to color & very fun to color also. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who is "into" adult coloring & likes sea life. Again, I really love the books with the black backgrounds since they seem to make your picture "pop out" & be seen

I am in love with this book. It has single sided pages so I can use my markers and not worry about bleed through.

I did not think I would actually keep interest in adult coloring books, but I love this book! I've done about 5 pictures out of it so far. The black background is great! It makes all the colors pop off the page and it helps cover up any mess-ups. I will not get anything other than coloring books with a black background now! I use Prisma colored pencils and they look amazing with it.

I have yet to be disappointed by Creative Haven coloring books. The few I bought were all good buys. This sea life one is my latest. I am really impressed by how beautiful each image is. Without color they are already stunning.One reason I bought this one was because of the black background. Only the background is black. The coloring portion is white in background. If the pages are black and only the outline is white, the medium would have to be very different. My gel pens look really different on black stock than on white stock.

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.  I love this coloring book and the pictures in it. If you use markers, always remember to put a piece of paper behind the picture you are coloring because there is a bit of bleed through but not too bad.

I love Creative Haven books- souch good quality, paper perfect, perforations a definite plus and the dark world books are such fun to colour. The paper takes light watercolour paints and acrylics. The single sided pages need a piece of blotting paper behind if using alcohol markers as the bleed through- All alcohol Markers should bleed through paper as it shows the degreee of colour perfection.I have many of this make of colouring books and this one is a beautiful addition. Its about time other colouring book makers took on board the single sided paper and perforations.
