. Review: Vinyl - Good tunes Review: Pink Floyd knows how to make a great record - A must have for true Floyd and David Gilmour fans. Interestingly, Roger Waters no longer being in the band made the album even better.

Great music and recording but the 2016 vinyl is mostly for the hobbyist
The Division Bell released in 1994 resembles a classic Pink Floyd more than the Final Cut which was essentially a Roger Waters album. Despite mediocre initial reviews, this album has grown in stature over the years and I would place this fourth in ranking next to Dark side, The Wall and Wish You Were Here. The Division Bell has some clever lyrics from Polly Samson put to memorable music by David Gilmour and Richard Wright. This review relates to the 2016 remastered vinyl version of this album just released by Pink Floyd Music. This is a 180g vinyl set with the tracks split up between two records to include complete versions of the songs. The sound is fresh and vibrant and lively but it is difficult to notice dramatic improvements from the initial CD version of this album as the recording was impeccable to start with. For the audiophile with expensive equipment, this album will provide sheer ecstasy as the pressing is stellar and the packaging, a pleasure to hold and cherish. What bugs me (and the reason for the 4 stars) is the heavy price tag - record companies are clearly making up for lost revenue by capitalizing on the new found vinyl craze. The cover of the album states that the sound was remastered using the original tapes but I am not sure that this album was originally recorded on analogue. It came out in the digital era and was probably recorded digitally. In which case, unless you are part of the vinyl craze or have new expensive equipment to test, the CD version at a quarter of the price should do just as well. What I would like to see however, is a remastered vinyl version of Dark Side of the Moon that sounds as open and vibrant as this version of the Division Bell. The 2011 vinyl version of the DSOM was a disappointment, replete with crackles. PS. According to one the remastering engineers, the entire Division Bell album was originally recorded on analogue tapes unlike 'Momentary Laps' that was part digital and part analogue.
