The single BEST book to get started with SQL!
This book has everything you need to get started learning SQL (and then some!).I used as a supplement to a coding boot-camp I was recently attending and I blew everyone else away at the speed and accuracy of the queries I wrote because of this book.A great reference for new and intermediate SQL query writers.A great follow up is Beginning T-SQL by Kathi Kellenberger and Scott Shaw if you are going to be using SQL Server from Microsoft. With the combo, you will at least be intermediate, or closer to an advanced, query writer.

I've been quite happy with this book
I've been quite happy with this book. I've been learning SQL basically through experimentation and Google Searches. This book does a very nice job of guiding the user along. It is very easy to follow. The book will serve as a handy reference I'm sure.

This is my most used book on SQL Server.
This is my favorite book on SQL Server. It is easy to find what you need if you forget syntax and just need a reminder. I doubt if you could really teach your self T-SQL from the book, especially in 10 minutes, but it is the best sourse I have found when used as a reference book.

Helpful book
This book was very helpful to learn SQL and is easy to read and understand. Several of us purchased this to help us start learning SQL and how to create queries with multiple views.

Amazing book for beginners and more!
Well, honestly, I didn't even know what means DBMS, and SQL syntax...nothing, beginner in every sense. But this book, man (OK took me some time to find out how to download MS SQL Studio) is amazing. It is so nice and clearly explained, that I am amazed. I passed half of the book in no time, rest now at the weekends, but this things inside are so useful, that you can confidently say that you are more than a basic user of SQL.To the author all the best!

Just stick with free online material, this book is bad.
As a beginner in SQL, I looked to this book to provide an easy-to-read, yet relatively comprehensive introduction to the core concepts of SQL. Excitedly (odd for database management), I turned to the pages dealing with Stored Procedures. In the section's 11 pages (3 of which were devoted to an unnecessary introduction, with no discussion about the actual SQL), there was little in-depth exploration of Stored Procedures and more information is readily available, in clearer prose, for free on the internet. Further, in these 11 pages, there were two careless errors. The first had to do with the scripting of a PROC, where one input example (pg 233), uses the wrong variables, which were just declared on the previous page, i.e.) declared variables: CREATE PROCEDURE productpricing @price_min MONEY OUTPUT, @price_max MONEY OUTPUT. Error: DECLARE @cheap MONEY . . . EXECUTE productpricing @cheap OUTPUT.The other error is on page 233, where the reader is referred to Appendix D for SQL Server Datatypes, when it is Appendix C.The content is of such a superficial nature as to be almost useless and the blatant and careless errors aren't encouraging for readers, who have to do research to ensure the methods contained in the book are accurate / best-practice.Do yourselves a favour and either find a Microsoft T-SQL text, or just use the wealth of free courses on the internet. This book is bad.

Excellent starter guide
Excellent starter guide. Most of the basics covered in manageable chunks but if you have the time it's not too overwhelming just to read in a day or two. It's clearly set out with plenty of examples. I found it very useful. Now for something more applied...
