Love the Charts with Symbols
The New Tunisian Crochet, Contemporary Designs from Time-Honored Traditions by Dora Ohrenstein is a new Tunisian/Afghan crochet book with some great added features.Since I am very familiar with Tunisian or Afghan Crochet, I took the book to our Fiber Fun meeting. Most of those involved are new to crocheting so they had never heard of Tunisian or Afghan Crochet. Each member looked though the book with interest. Most felt it's an interesting technique that makes crocheting appear as knitted fabric and would like to try the technique. They especially liked the projects presented for beginners didn't look like "beginner's" projects. The Natalia Scarf by Ms. Ohrenstein on page 116 gave them the opportunity to practice some of the basic stitches yet allowed them to create a very complicated-looking, fashionable scarf. The Ariadne Sampler Throw by Lisa Daehlin on page 104 also offered them a way to learn numerous stitches while creating a lovely, practical item. The most popular vote went to Doris Chan's Shantay Skirt on page 90. Everyone wanted to make that skirt - after they've lost a few pounds, of course. Some would need a little help with the more advanced projects, but that is why our group meets - to help each other learn a new fiber technique. I definitely think Tunisian or Afghan Crochet is a great crochet technique to learn and Ms. Ohrenstien's book presented it with some very helpful items. These include a symbol key for each stitch and charts using these symbols to show each row's forward and return stitches - very beneficial to new as well as experienced Tunisian crocheters.

This book is a wonderful modern look at Tunisian
This book is a wonderful modern look at Tunisian. The stitch patterns are varied and interesting and the directions that include charts have been very easy to read and execute. I haven't tackled any of the projects, I have been using some of the stitch patterns in my own improvised work. There are several things I intend to make because they are gorgeous and also because I can see what I have to learn from them. This is not really a beginners guide, even though it does cover the basics if you need a refresher. This book also has a nice bit about the history of Tunisian in the front, probably the longest writing on the topic I have seen.

Lots of Stitches and Techniques
I don't like pattern books that simply chart the steps. I need techniques that I can apply to my own ideas. This book provides that, along with lots of stitches, and a few patterns for clothing items (vest, sweater, hats, mittens, etc.), a rug, a bag, offering a means to practice the new skills that you can apply to your own projects. After reading through it, I think it will be a useful book and I really like it, although I can't say I have tested it for accuracy. That accounts for 4 stars vs. 5 stars. If I find the instructions and guidelines to be reliable, I will return to raise my rating.

Pretty good overview of Tunisian Crochet
This book tells you how to do lots of different Tunisian crochet stitches. I say tells, because it doesn't provide nearly enough graphic support (photos of swatches of the stitch, but few photos of how to do the stitch). It does illustrate the basic stitches w/ drawings or photos, but the other stitches come only with verbal instructions. Of the 3 books I bought on TC this one was the most helpful for learning how to do it. It has some nice patterns too. I recommend to anyone trying to learn this technique that they combine a book or 2 with Youtube videos.

Tunisian Crochet
Dora Ohrenstein is a part of a group of what I like to call "crochet thinkers." They are not so much about just writing patterns or doing You Tube videos; they like to think about and challenge us about how crochet can be re-imagined and re-invented, Of course, there are many talented designers and teachers out there that have created a new universe of crochet simply because they love working with the technique. But these "thinkers" like Dora, Vashti Braha, and Carol Ventura have given us new ways of seeing - taking crochet to new levels. This book gives wonderful examples of Dora's thinking and application of crochet.

Great book with great patterns, easy to read and follow.
Dora does great lessons - here and on her videos. I really like this book - it's easy to read, easy to follow the instructions, and great pics. I started learning Tunisian crochet a few months ago and have been collecting books and videos on it - this one is a great one if you want to learn stitches and also have some projects to look at. I have made the hat a few times now and added my own twists to it, and love the patters.

I'm a long-time knitter and crocheter and was excited to get this book to learn a new art. I was deeply disappointed that the chapters that explained how to actually do Tunisian crochet came with so few illustrations on how to do the stitches that I had to use another book to learn them as well. The patterns were great, but what I really wanted was a tutorial. This is a good book to add to your library, but it could have been better illustrated and actually emphasized teaching Tunisian crochet instead of offering nice patterns.

ancient to modern
I've recently discovered this long forgotten form of crochet. It is good to see an old technique applied to modern design and style. I look forward to many dark evenings deciphering the patterns. The book is well presented and gives clear instructions of techniques.

Interesting
I love trying different aspects of different crafts so I knew this book would be a winner for me. My only minor critisism is that one or two of the designs are a bit dated/dowdy but I suppose if your trying to interest a wide range of practitioners not all designs are going to appeal to all.

Slim volume
I have purchased 4 books on Tunisian Crochet, hoping for useable patterns. This one has not fired me to make anything shown within its pages.
