The Tastemaker: Carl Van Vechten and the Birth of Modern America

Great Read
Excellent and balanced view of the life of Carl Van Vechten and his important role in the changing world of his day. His contributions to Modern art/culture and Black art/culture were unquestionably game-changing during this period of immense transition. His egocentric party boy personality and sexual escapades only make it clear that one can be wonderfully individualistic and human while simultaneously impacting the world. Anyone interested in the 1910's/1920's should read this book. Even if you are not familiar with Van Vechten, you'll know almost every other name mentioned.

A good read
People who invent themselves are always interesting. Van Vechten was poised on the brink of cultural change and jumped right in. Ambition counts. The author is not the most exciting, but the book is still enjoyable.

Well written, interesting and gives one insight into the motives of this very outlandish man.
