Excellent tool, saved me hours of work
I had been searching for a cable tracing tool like this. The house I'm renting currently has the entire house wired with Cat-5 backing, but all jacks are RJ-11. And to top it off, there was no distribution panel at all. All of the Cat-5 was simply unterminated in the Attic. This meant there was a bundle of ~30 cables, from all different sections of the house. So my job was to replace one of the jacks, then go up and punch that cable down into a patch panel so it could be connected to my switch. Sounds easy... but when you have to find _the_ cable out of a bunch of 30 of them, all while standing on a ladder in a hot attic... it was not pleasant to say the least.Previously, the way I detected the right cable was with an RJ-45 tester. I would put one end into the Cat-5 jack in the wall that I just wired, and then go to the attic, and one by one, I would punch down one of the cables into one of the patch ports, and have the other end of the tester hooked into the patch port. It works, but incredibly slowly.I found out about cable tracers, and bought this almost immediately to try it out. I've added two new jacks using this device and it is _SO FREAKIGN EASY_. Plug one end into the jack in the wall, go up the ladder with the wand end and in a matter of seconds, can find the specific cable when the wand starts beeping. The sensitivity is adjustable, which I found helpful when trying to discriminate between the last few possible cables. All in all, this cut the time I have to spend in the attic patching cables down by like 99%, no joke.I'm hoping the tool lasts well, but as it stands right now, this is one of the best purchases I've made in terms of tools so far.

DONT waste your money or Time.
I wanted to like this but right from the start I had an issue with the transmitter. It would power up but no display. Go to scan and the light would flash and die. The reciever seemed to power up fine. So I replaced the batteries with new duracells and volia, transmitter powered up fine. Now to test, first cable, lines 1 & 2 Dead....Figured I found my problem. Checked a few more and they all tested the same., lines 1 & 2 dead. Grabed some brand new cables and they all tested just like the rest. What a POS. right out of the box one dead battery (it was sealed in wrapping), and the unit is a dud. Not very happy when i'm right in the middle of troubleshooting some wiring issue in the home.Maybe I just got a dud but it's a total waste of my time now and I have to return this POS as well.

Misleading
The power button on the wand barely worked. I had to push in really hard to get it to turn on. I'm it sure if it's a feature or flaw since it does help with it accidentally turning on and running the battery down. However, the real problems I had was the only function that worked was testing the cable. Both scan and tone did not work work. Also "Network" doesn't actually test for network activity, it just tests the pins of the cable to make sure the ends are correct. For what this does there are simpler designs at a cheaper price that gets the same job done.

Great product for the money
Replaced another piece of junk that was the same price on Amazon. The original POS is now listed on Amazon under a different name and company. Very happy with this purchase. Comes with a nice zipper bag for storage.

Amazing item for its price. Good build quality.

Very cheaply built, could be better
It works, the signal doesn't have pin point accuracy over ethernett but it will get you close enough. You get what you pay for, and in this case its a cheap plastic instrument that I don't expect to last.
