Delivered box says surface pro 8 so have i got an 'old' keyboard as i have the pro 9 - which is what i thought i had ordered

No, not necessarily. They haven't changed the ports or magnetic keyboard connections on 6, 7 or 8 in my experience and therefore I think it'll work on the Pro 9.

This is advertised as being suitable for surface pro 9. The item that has arrived shows it being for the pro 8 or pro x. Is this the wrong item??

Since the Surface Pro 9 is identical design-wise, with the same aesthetics and ports, the keyboard should be compatible as well (as it happened with many other Surface Keyboards long before). Since this keyboard was produced way before the Surface Pro 9 was released, it shows on the “old” box just the “old” products.
