Always A Great Read
Great twists and turns. Courtroom scenes are fast paced, interesting and thoroughly enjoyable. Even having scene this on on TV it was still good. Ready for the next one.

Pretty, pretty, good …….
I liked it but it was a tad long. I’m going to look for another Lincoln Lawyer book and see what I think about the series.

A nuanced legal thriller with a conscience
It takes a certain personality to defend criminal cases. Mickey Haller has taken a bold step from menial foreclosure cases to a murder trial to carry him over from a depressed economy and a faltering foreclosure caseload. The result is a nuanced depiction of the third rail steps a defense lawyer often takes in pursuit of his client's cause. The question is whether Haller has the stomach to do whatever it takes to win, or whether it will foil any chance he has to reconcile with his prosecutor ex-wife Maggie This is a wonderful work by Michael Connoly. The plot moves along at a normal pace, and then Pow!-an explosion of surprises, twists, and a fulsome ending of epic proportions. This is a great legal drama with amazing insight into the thought processes of both sides. Mickey Haller's young assistant is an interesting new character who exemplifies the conflicted nature of representing a client who may have committed a heinous premediated murder. Will she get used to the nature of defense work? Will her conscience dissuade her from "just getting used to it"? And for that matter, will the Lincoln Lawyer be able to live with his conscience???

great plot
Lots of unexpected surprises in this plot. I wasn’t sure at first compared to the first three but this is probably my favorite one so far.

another great story
Connelly comes through again. Mickey is a great character. Like Bosch more, but the attorney side is fantastic too. Slay

kept my attention!
What did I like? First, I like the sexual tension between Maggie and Mickey. I almost feel like I am watching the Moonlighters show from the eighties. I also love Micks team of ex wives and ex cons and new recruits. What I love most is the way the author can make you feel the tension in the room on all parties: Judge, Prosecutor, Defense, accused, the jury, and even the witnesses. I am not a writer, so I am in awe of a great storyteller who can articulate a stories complexities in such a way that it is easily read and understood and so far everyone of his books have been great!

Flawed, but Connelly still knows how to write a page-turner
I'm pretty amazed that this book already has more reviews than Connelly's last book, The Reversal....most of them complaining about E-book prices. I wonder how many of them planned on buying the book to begin with, but there you go. If you like a popular author, you should expect to maybe pay a bit more for his books when they first come out. It's the way the world works, people. If it bothers you wait for the paperback.Anyway, onto the review itself. The Fifth Witness is a solid courtroom novel, and at times quite a page-turner. Like The Reversal, once we actually get to the trial, the novel surges with electricity and intensity that I wish was present throughout more of it.Looking at Connelly's last few books, (The Overlook, Brass Verdict, 9 Dragons, The Reversal) his style has definitely changed in recent years. With the exception of Brass Verdict, which I actually think is one of his best, he seems to be favoring simpler and more straightforward plots in his latest books, and this one's no exception. The main case here just isn't all that interesting, and never really expands beyond how it begins. Gone are the clockwork plots and revelations that Connelly's books used to be known for, replaced with a much more straightforward approach, though in this case it seems to be even a bit moreso than in the past.Other problems include the fact that the defendant's so unlikable (which is the point, to Connelly's credit) that it's even harder to really care much about what happens to her. Regarding Haller, it's always entertaining to read his 1st person narration, though this book doesn't do a whole lot to develop his character. Maggie looks to me like she's turning into an Eleanor Wish-type of character and I *really* hope I'm wrong about that. Their relationship kind of got on my nerves this time around. All that said, and I can't stress this enough, this is a quality book. Connelly's one of my favorite writers and he knows how to grab you and pull you along for the ride, and once we get to the courtroom, that's exactly what happens. The book's ending was surprising and I didn't see it coming, though it could have used a bit more explanation, as I'm still not entirely sure what was actually true and what wasn't.The foreclosure angle's something Connelly hasn't explored much in the past, but there's not much there to explore, and I think that all the explanations required so that the reader can understand the somewhat complex workings of this system bog the book down in its first 1/3.If I sound harsh, it's just because I have huge respect for Michael Connelly and that may lead me to sometimes expect too much. To me though this represents "middle of the road" Connelly. Neither his best nor his worst, just average. Nothing really we haven't seen before. I hope we see a return to the more complex plotlines that Connelly used to be known for, but either way, I'll continue to buy and enjoy every single book he puts out.And in the grand scheme of things, paying $14 for a hardcover really doesn't strike me as all that outrageous. But what are you going to do...Sure, it would be nice if the publisher would take this reaction into account, but really, it's not the book's or the author's fault.
