Q: How far does the protective part of the knickers come up the front? I’ve found some makes don’t come up high enough?

Not too far at the front but all the way up the back.

Q: Can you wear these without other pads?

My daughter does, she currently only uses these on her lighter to medium flow days & uses thicker re-usable pads on the odd heavy day.

Q: What flow are these for?

I would say for up to at least medium flow I have bought them for my daughter who is 11 and she has told me how comfortable they are and no messing around with pads also the inside of pants are black so you cannot even see blood really well worth it very good quality and also wash really well and the packaging is lovely a really nice box.

Q: Are these absorbent enough to wear without pads? And what size to buy for a slim 12 nearly 13 year old?

Sorry I answered on the absorbency and never needed a pad with them and no leaks. Size runs a little small so for my 8 year old I bought her a Medium which I believe is a size 10. For your almost 13 year old I would buy age 14 as they do run a little small.
