Powerful tool, budget friendly!
Looking at all the different scanners on the market was a bit overwhelming. I read so many reviews and watched so many videos that I had entered the "paralysis by analisys" stage and nearly gave up. But then the D8S really caught my attention. The features that I wanted were there, especially the topographic display, and the price was comfortably within my budget. The quality of this tool seems very good. The display is clear and bright. The interface was easy to learn, mostly intuitive. I've been able to read factory level codes that my other scanners weren't able to view. This lead me to solutions on a couple vehicles that I otherwise would have had to do a lot of trial and error troubleshooting to figure out. Likewise, the extensive live data graphing is very good and has also been instrumental in diagnosing some issues on a couple other vehicles. I've even been able to program extra keys to my own car, saving hundreds of dollars in that alone. Using the kickstand to hang the scanner from the steering wheel is a nice option to have as well. This model is the wired model. And although Bluetooth would probably come in handy, I appreciate that by plugging into the OBD2 port, the scanner can charge itself via the power provided by the port. With that in mind, I haven't had any complaints about the battery life when I'm not plugged in and searching for code definitions, updates, or whatever. AND, it comes with 3 years of updates. I couldn't be happier with this tool!

Best tool for DIY automotive diagnosis & repairs
I bought this tool to track down and solve a PO300 Multiple Misfire code on a 2005 Chevy Silverado I bought recently. Using this tool, I was able to track the misfiring cylinders, O2 sensors, short and long term fuel trims. This saved me a lot of money going to a friend's shop and having him use his scan tool to identify which coil packs needed to be tested and what needed to be replaced. A tool like this will help prevent replacing parts that don't need to be replaced. It tool me 5 minutes to figure out the menus and get to the information I needed to make my repairs. I'm still learning it's functions and features, but so far, it looks like it's one of the best tools I could have purchased for working on later model vehicles, that will save me time and money. It's definitely worth the price, and on par with the more expensive Snap-on counter part of this tool. Well folks, it's a year later, and I'm here to follow up on this review. I've been using this tool for both my car and truck and I've solved a lot of problems and saved myself a ton of money in the process. I've also helped out a few friends and family with their cars and saved them some loot too. This tool has paid for itself over and over again. I've also gotten deeper into it and learned more functions and tests to do on my vehicles that would have cost me $75.00/Hr. at a service center. Recently, I got an error message on power up that couldn't be resolved, so I contacted Xtool Support. They got back to me within 24 hrs. They helped me resolve the issue, and the tool is back to perfect working order. They were very good with their customer support, and they offered me some advice that I'll pass along here to other DIY'ers who may be thinking of buying one of these; First, I hadn't used mine in the past few months, and it was stored in its case in a climate controlled area. I was advised with a tool like this to power it up at least once every 30 days to keep it updated and the firmware current. This is something I suggested they print more prominently in the owners manual for people like me who don't use this every day in a professional environment. It will help prevent software glitches. And, it's a good idea to also recharge it fully when you do this to avoid issues with the battery. It makes sense. Taking the customer support into account with all I've used this for since I bought it, makes this an even better bargain. If you want to do your own work on your OBD II vehicles, and you need a tool that will help you get it done, then I recommend one of these Xtool products. It's the right tool for the job.

Great tool for DIY & shops on a budget, great support, 3 years free software upgrades
### Long Review but worth the time to read ### ### - Summary - Really good tool for DIY & Shops on a budget, great email, phone, and remote screen sharing customer service/support, 3 years free software upgrades ### ### Detailed Review #### If you are a DIY mechanic looking for more than a basic ODBII code reader or have an automotive shop and not looking to break the bank, the XTOOL D8 is a good option and something you should consider. I saw a review for the D7 last year and was really impressed but could not justify the costs at that time. Stumbled across a discount offer (saved 25-30%) on the D8 a few weeks ago that was too good to pass up. There was also 3 years of software updates included (other products in the same space charge upward of $200 per update..yikes) with the purchase! If you have never used a pro level diagnostic tool it can be a little intimidating, but the Xtool screens/displays/menus make it easy to run automatic scans and jump into specific functions based on your needs. Depending on the age of the vehicle and on-board features, you can complete and control all kinds of tests/functions from the D8s menu system. Examples I have 4 different cars ranging from 2002 to 2020. While the computer on the 2002 may not have as many functions as the 2020, with the D8 I have full access to all the available functions/features allowed by each car. The D8 helped me we diagnose/confirm the issue with a door lock on my 2014 was the switch and not the actuator motor. It also helped me monitor the trans fluid temp while performing a transmission fluid service on the sealed transmission in the same car. While there are other ways to monitor the temp, they are less accurate and require additional steps/procedures. Key reprogramming/replacement on newer cars can be expensive. The dealers charges are not cheap, but with the D8 I can complete the replacement key programming & sync process. For use/pre-owned car owners, do you REALLY know that the dealer or seller gave you ALL the keys/phoebes sync with your cars? With the D8 you can complete a process to remove all PREVIOUS keys that were synced with the cars and only re-sync your keys/phoebes you have in hand. While the features of the D8 are important, I believe XTool's customer service/support is what separates them form other competitors with similar products. I have used their email support but have seen they have options for phone/web/remote control support (using TeamViewer on the tool). Even before you buy, you can send them questions via email or Amazon about what the tool does and what features it has. They asked for my VIN #s to provide more accurate information and replies usually came within a day. Even after I bought the D8 and had questions, they were very responsive with replies. I have read review about "similar" products and a common theme with those is that customer support is lacking, and responses are slow or not at all. Having a tool like this may be a luxury for some but in my case its paid for itself in repair diagnosis/cost savings. It even helped while looking for a used car recently. Any car we looked at, I plugged in the D8 and ran a quick scan to check codes. I could even tell if the codes were cleared recently without the emission/smog drive cycle being completed (red flag). Depending on the age of the car, I was also able to quickly jump into running some deeper tests/scans to make sure everything was in working order. Lets just say that there were more than a few cars we walked away from because of the info provided by the D8.

Great bidirectional scanner
I have five vehicles ranging from a Chevy to a bmw. This scanner does so much more than your typical obd scanner, so it can handle almost any problem a modern day car throws at you. If Xtool support is needed, they are great and will provide support for your scanner by remote access. I have had the scanner for about three years so I am happy with it so far. It’s a small investment that will pay itself off quickly!

Awesome Capability and ease of use
I bought this tool specifically to fix a hybrid car problem. My 2005 Prius had the dreaded "triangle of Death" . For those who do not know, this means the car will not work in any way, but does not specify wether the problem is mechanical, electrical or both. With the Xtool D8 I hoped to find and fix the issue, and I was not disappointed. The D8 immediately connected to the car network, and presented several codes. the interface was great, and easy to click through the problem codes to get advanced diagnostic data, live and freeze frame data from the car canbus network, and help to use my skills to find and fix the root cause. The battery control computer was found faulty, and with some digging and visual inspection I was able to replace the part, and my Prius was back on the road. Since that time the D8 has helped me find problems in many cars and Trucks. from resetting transmission 'learning' mode to smooth out shifts, properly bleeding abs brakes, to adjusting fuel pressure and A/F ratios on light diesels. Even Identifying the notorious VTEC solenoid issues in Honda engines and Shift Errors in later GM truck transmissions. (Change the fluid often!) This tool has paid for itself many times over with advanced diagnosis saving the typical Parts Cannon Approach to fixing todays sophisticated automotive systems. While I am not a professional shop, I am considered by many friends and famiy to have advanced mechanical skills, with over 40 years of auto repair experience. In short, this is a very sophisticated tool that should definitely be added to any serious enthusiast toolbox. It has programmed keys and remotes for several cars, which alone is savings well beyond the purchase cost. I have paid a lot less for other tools, only to find they were worth it by doing a lot less. My only 'challenge' is that I wish I had bought the wireless option, but that is on me. Xtool has provided excellent customer support with software updates to cover all the latest developments in tech, as well as help me better understand how to use the equipment. I thought quite a bit about spending this much on a tool for my issues, and look back and consider one of the value purchases I have made. TL,DR: Great Product. Great Value! Amazing Customer Service.

Good price for what you get.
This is a great scanner and I’ve used it to program keys for a Mazda cx7 which has almost paid for the scanner in savings. There are some problems with this scanner, does not work well with every vehicle, there needs to be a battery voltage monitor and oil reset can be hit or miss. The menu isn’t the most user friendly and can be a bit confusing. The company has been very good with communication and is quick to respond. I’m a licensed and certified technician and I use this at work, there are times when I have to grab my old autel scanner but then there are times when the xtool does better. Overall this is a great scanner for the price, it needs some work to be better but the company seems to be on top of the updates.

A Mechanic Shop in a Tablet!!!
I consider myself a pretty good DIYer, and for years I've been stuck between cheap code readers that do nothing and professional tools that cost thousands. The XTool D8S has finally bridged that gap. It’s an OE-level bi-directional scanner at an excellent price. It has paid for itself multiple times over by allowing me to perform dealer-only maintenance and correctly diagnose issues I would have otherwise guessed at. If you’re serious about working on modern cars, this is the tool to get. The 3 years of free updates were a huge deciding factor. XTool is constantly adding new vehicles and features, and I love that I don't have to worry about renewal fees for three years. The updates themselves are easy, done right over Wi-Fi. The 8-inch screen is bright and seems durable. My only real gripe is the speed. It’s not slow enough to be frustrating, but the initial boot and sometimes the loading between deep diagnostic menus can feel a bit sluggish. (Note: This is a common trade-off for the price—you’re getting the software function of a $2,000+ tool on the hardware of a lower-cost tablet.) Of course is not a Snap-on Solus+ fast, but you’re not paying Snap-on money. ($3600) The XTool D8S is, without a doubt, the best investment I’ve made for my garage. It eliminated the guesswork, gave me the confidence to take on more complex repairs like coding a new occupancy sensor on an a friend’s Infinity Q60 and programming my own key fobs on my G37. It brings professional-level capabilities like Topology Mapping and true Bi-Directional Control into the hands of the dedicated DIYer. I highly recommend it.
