Q: Is this pen safe for writing on the back of photos? ("archival"?)

I think it is. RSVP pens are not gel based and don't smear. The writing is very thin. If they are important photos, I would test it out on something else first to make sure you're ok with the results.

I love writing in a fine line. I have some Pentel retractable pens, but they are medium width. I didn't know they made fine line retractable pens. Q: Is this the same bright purple as the energel pen?

Ohh, Lordy no! The Energel ink is much more vibrant. I use this for a correcting pen for my students.

Q: As the pen gets used, sits around for a while, then does the ink on the tip ever build up and consequentally smear when you start to use the pen?

I always cap mine after each use. I’ve NEVER had an issue with these pens, and I’ve been using them since 2003. They are excellent.
