I would never ever go out with this as the sole method of firestarting! That said, it makes a great back up for fire starting, but one must exert caution with it and pull BACK on the corkscrew ferro rod leaving the striker in place (opposite of what most people do) to avoid breaking it (and makes it less likely to hit the tender nest with your striker, so some prefer this technique with all ferro rod fire starting). Expensive, but peace of mind is worth it.

This is a great value when you need to start a fire. Easy carry on your knife, can't go wrong with them

There are single color alternatives made by same company for much less money. If you have a SAK with corkscrew it's definitely worth considering these. I put shrink tubing over these once installed as the tinder frays easily when rubbing in pockets or packs.

I am refurbishing a couple SAKs for gifts, and wanted this fire starter in one. The orange tinders are kind of like hard wax, and deform when trying to screw them in. As a result, the ferro rod won't go through the center if you screw them in separately. If you screw them in together, the force required breaks the the rod. What a waste of money. I love Victorinox products typically, but this one is a NO. Just get a separate fire rod if you need one, these are useless.

difficult to use because the ferro rod kept slipping out. all 3 were faulty. i expected more especially for the price point. it did however start a fire with the included tender under vary favorable circumstances.
