Pan Sinatra: Behind the Legend

Of course I knew OF Sinatra, I mean who doesn't. I have watched some of his films (but didn't know he made so many), I have many of his songs on my playlist but didn't know the depths of the meaning of them, how many were so indicative of his life, I knew of the whispers about him and the mafia.I didn't realise how driven he was, the sacrifices the many women in his life made to just be part of it, the complexities of his character.The book doesn't romanticise his life, he was a complex man. I didn't really realise how old he was when he died but to read this book is to see life through the eyes of those who knew him, the glamour of Hollywood, the depths of despair.I now know Sinatra was a most complicated, tortured genius and his music has more meaning now than before. If you want to know Sinatra, read this book

I wish I could give this more than 5 stars. There is a whole era of Holywood just out of our grasp. A bit before our time. But it will never be repeated. All those icons rubbing shoulders - Monroe, the Kennedys, Ava Gardiner (the female equivalent of Sinatra) - the seediness of some of their dealings, the failed relationships and children (oh his children were horrors throwing tantrums when daddy did something with his wife on his birthday even though they'd arranged nothing and forever refusing to visit his house) But throughout he had that magical, magnificent voice that all the Buble's can never recreate. But not only did he have the golden voice, he was an Oscar winning actor and a passable dancer. I actually grieved when I finished this book. I wished I could read it all over again - and I will.
