Unlike those garden tools constructed mostly of relatively thin stainless steel, this is constructed of much chunkier and heavy metal and either painted or anodised in a bronze-brown finish. The handle is also quite chunky and should provide a very good grip when in use. A leather loop has been threaded through the handle so that it can be hung on a hook when not needed. The blade is easily washed under running water or in a bucket after use, although a coarse brush may be needed for stubborn soil accumulations. After drying, a light oiling may be beneficial. The blade of the trowel is relatively long, narrow and deeply curved, which should add to its strength and make it less likely to bend if used in a spot of heavy soil, gravel or other dense material. The shaft is about 1/4-inch in diameter and should also be strong. A measuring guage has been cast or cut into the blade, divided into cm and 1/2-inch scales, that will help with the assessment of the depth of a hole or with the planting distances between plants. I have found the tool to be very sturdy, not only for the advertised purpose, but as a means to dig out the residues of a few cut-down bushes that were no longer wanted allowing the bowls to be exposed and sawn out and their larger roots to be traced back and removed. I had considered purchasing the companion standard trowel (wider blade and rounded tip), either as an addition to this or as an alternative, but it would now be surplus to requirements. Although the Elements range and low pricing suggest that this is medium quality product, it appears to be worthy of a higher grading. A very effective and inexpensive tool and one that should last for many years.
