I tried to hide it underneath. Still my heart starts to beat.
All the haters seem to come out with each new Coldplay album. They seem to be the most hated band du jour currently. Yet, it wasn't always this way. It's as if the band has become so ubiquitous that they just have to be hated. The thing is, I was there when "Yellow" arrived on the music scene, and what people need to keep in mind is that Coldplay were not very original from the beginning. "Yellow" and their debut "Parachutes" was just alternative rock that borrowed from the late 70's and early 80's New Wave/College Rock scene. So all of you who desire the 'early days' of Coldplay, well, it's not like they were that great back then. For some reason critics and fans seem to think the band's second album, "A Rush of Blood to the Head" is their finest work, but it isn't. It's over rated. In fact, beginning with their third album, "X & Y" the band finally found their footing, and they haven't looked back since. "Music of the Spheres" is getting negative press and criticism everywhere I read. Yet, after I listened to it multiple times, over and over, I felt it was just as good as its cousins "Mylo Xyloto" and "A Head Full of Dreams". I'm not a fan of pointless segues, and there are many on "Music of the Spheres", but they don't detract from the overall feel of the album, though I think they could have been left off, and I think they 'pad' the albums seven songs. The band can't seem to shake the segue fever found on all of their albums over the past decade. I wish they would get rid of the 'concept' idea. This being said, I liked six of the seven 'main' tracks. The one I didn't really get into is the overlong 10 and a half minute album closer, "Coloratura". Yes, ELP, Genesis, Rush, Asia, King Crimson, Styx, Supertramp--they are not. They want to be progressive rock, but they can't quite pull it off because they don't have virtuoso musicians in their band. Unlike others, I didn't find fault with the lyrics. These are typical Coldplay lyrics here, so I don't get what those haters are talking about it. There are collaborations with Selena Gomez, We the Kings, and BTS which enhance, not detract from, the overall feel of the album. The weirdest song here is "Biutyful", and I'd like to know if it was Chris Martin's idea to tweak his voice to sound like an alien girl child? Catchy, but strange. Finally, I've noticed the trend of alternating pop album with alternative rock album for the past decade. That means, the band's next album will be 'serious' to assuage all the fans who can't seem to adjust with the band. I would like to see Coldplay branch out musically and try different genres and instrumentations. I give "Music of the Spheres" four stars. It's good, not classic. Here's how "Music of the Spheres" compares to Coldplay's previous works: 2000 Parachutes: Three Stars 2002 A Rush Of Blood To The Head: Three and a Half Stars 2005 X & Y: Four Stars 2008 Viva La Vida: Five Stars 2011 Mylo Xyloto: Four Stars 2014 Ghost Stories: Three Stars 2015 A Head Full Of Dreams: Four Stars 2019 Everyday Life: Four Stars 2021 Music of the Spheres: Four Stars
