A very intense movie with lots of symbolism and up to the detail with great performances. The movie is an adaptation of an mediocre pulp fiction story only it is one of the best movies of our time. Even replaced some obvious symbolism with deeper ones and accompanied by the great music of Miles Davis. I strongly recommend.First I've come across with the soundtrack and while I was listening to it I've noticed the pessimism and uneasy feelings and wondered about the movie and I've decided to watch the movie. The movie was incredible. Then I've decided to read the original novel. When I've read the book I've disappointed and understood that the script is way too much much exceeding the novel. This is something rare.

slow and stupid

"Siesta" is indeed a forgotten masterpiece today. Much lesser movies get much better DVD transfers than this movie, which is not only unfair, but completely incomprehensible. This movie does indeed feel like a dream. It is hazy, and you never quite know if you're actually awake or sitting infront of your television screen. The story is that of murder, mystery, lust, and love. It is a classic blend of all of these themes, and the cast really gets it to work. Ellen Barkin does a great job as the female lead and Gabriel Byrne is as reliable and sturdy as always. Jodie Foster is at a relatively early stage of her career, but she shows promise. Julian Sands is great, as is Isabella Rossalini. Martin Sheen and Grace Jones also make small cameo appearances. The movie is beautifully shot, and everything looks great. The sound is by the great Miles Davis and it adds to the movie's hazy atmosphere. I definitely recommend this forgotten gem from 1987.The only thing to be mourned, is the poor transfer to DVD, so here's hoping that it gets the Blu-ray treatment it deserves.

Other reviewers have mentioned the similaties between "Siesta" and "Jacob's Ladder." I would also like to introduce "Stay" into that mix. I must admit that all the clues are clearly in place, but I didn't recognize the twist until the end. This film has got a tremendous cast with some actors merely in it for a few minutes. Martin Sheen comes to mind. Ellen Barkin is fetching in her red dress. And the franticness with which she plays her character is disturbing. "Siesta" would not work as well as it does if not for the work of Miles Davis/Marcus Miller.

Die filmischen Rückblenden erschweren einerseits das Nachvollziehen der Handlung (ein bißchen abgemildert durch Datumseinblendungen), andererseits sind sie halt das richtige Stilmittel, um die Gegenwart der Hauptfigur Claire (Ellen Barkin), mit ihren Erinnerungen zu verknüpfen. Es ist eine stilistisch ansprechende Parallele, daß sich im Film Claire ihre jüngsten Erlebnisse zusammenreimen muß und der Zuschauer ohne Wissensvorsprung quasi die gleiche Aufgabe bekommt. In der prominenten Besetzung neben Gabriel Byrne, Isabella Rossellini ,Martin Sheen, Grace Jones und Jodie Foster hätte auch Madonna stehen können. Sie hat der Regisseurin Mary Lambert wegen der Nacktszenen einen Korb gegeben, aber sie für ihr Musikvideo "La Isla Bonita" Regie führen lassen. Vor 30 Jahren war der Film erfolglos, ist aber reizvoll genug, um auch heute ein kleines Publikum zu finden.

remember seeing previews along time ago but the movie was never available. Love that its all Ellen Barkin & all of EB is in the movie. The plot is confusing, favorite scene is Claire on a high wire, I mean did EB really walk the tightrope. Jody Foster is a surprise ¬ quite sure what is the point of her character.

書籍の月間三津谷葉子のような過激さを映像で見てみたいと期待をしていたのですが…まだまだそこまで行く予定はなさそうです。ほとんど同じ場所での撮影は少し見ていて飽きてしまうかもしれませんが、映像撮り方は美しいです。
