Gardening for Quilters
In my ever-constant search for inspirational applique, I stumbled across this gem. It is a crying shame that we are not given the option to Look Inside this book. UPDATE 3/5/15 Photos added.Adams, Allen, and Creamer have put together designs for 12 projects in this book. The book begins with an 84x84-inch Feature Quilt by Adams & Allen worked up in two different colorways. Each block uses applique to showcase blooms found throughout the garden. The blocks feature these flowers spilling from various baskets, vases, and pitchers. One thing I love about the blocks is that they measure 20½ inches square. I love this because the larger size makes these blocks so versatile. For example, I can use an individual block as a pillow front or a wall hanging. This makes for a manageable project for gift giving, for which I'm always looking. Another plus to the block size is how quickly a project will work up and the applique pieces are of a nice size; not small and fiddly. The blocks are broken down by seasonal blooms. Seasons are also depicted in the color choices used. The two winter blocks features poinsettia, holly leaves, berries, and amaryllis. In the two blocks for spring; bleeding hearts, peonies, pansies, and tulips. There are three blocks for summer featuring; geraniums, and summer herbs (rosemary, dwarf myrtle.) The third summer block varies from using a container, there is instead, a delightful depiction of an English cottage surrounded by a riotous English garden. (This is my favorite block.) The two blocks of Autumn feature; cone flowers, cockscomb, oak leaves, and acorns. In each of the blocks we also see vines, leaves, stars, bees, and a butterfly or two.A delightful bonus to this amazing book is that each quilt block is accompanied by a beautiful photo of a container garden and instructions for planting it! This is absolutely wonderful for me as I am not a gardener but I want to be one!The eleven additional projects include: a sheet set & pillow shams; a top sheet & pillow; seasonal purses using even more applique designs; a 29½-inch square quilt featuring stars and tulips; a 68-inch by 85-inch quilt using patchwork (no applique in this quilt); a 44-inch square quilt using applique and patchwork blocks of stars and butterflies; an 8x8-inch hooked rug of a cottage; 4½-inch square needle-punch vase of flowers; 10-inch square red-work pillows embroidered using a stem stitch; a 64x64-inch quilt of appliqued containers of blooms; and a 70x70-inch Christmas quilt featuring containers of poinsettia, holly, and berries. As to instructions and templates: the instructions are clear and comprehensive. There is a section of specific instruction on turned edge hand applique using freezer paper. Instructions for specific techniques are included with each project using them. The applique templates are full size so no enlargement is necessary there. However, the applique placement diagrams for the seasonal blocks do require enlargement.

Appliqué book
Great book. I’ve been looking for appliqué designs to use on larger blocks because everything is small. And this one covered large and a few small designs
