How wide is the ladder on this bed?

Does a standard twin matress fit or does it need to be low profile so the guard rail is tall enough to prevent falling?

You would absolutely need a LOW profile to prevent falling. I also recommend a bunkie board as these beds have MASSIVE gaps in the frame and matressed fall through. We have 10inch foam mattresses for our boys, and there is maybe a 4 inch border still. However, the beds are not crazy tall. Anyone over 4-5yo shouldn't have an issue with not falling, but under that age you may need a supplemental guard. These beds have some flaws, but we've been happy with them over all. Our 5/6yo sons (age at purchase, now 8/9) have been happy with them.
