You partially sit on the transfer board and slide yourself to another surface. I use this transfer board primarily to transfer myself from my wheelchair to the bed. It is very sturdy and secure. I use a lighter weight wooden board for transferring to the car. For instructions in transferring techniques, I found it helpful to view YouTube videos for guidance.

Q: Need a slider board for my mother to transfer from her w/c to the car & back. this one is about 3" shorter than the pt one. would it be long enough?

I guess that would depend on how long the the PT one is! It needs to be long enough to bridge the gap between her wheelchair and the car seat. Measure from the center of her wheelchair seat to the center of the car seat. I own this board for use in my home and think it'd be a great car board; heavy, very rigid, rubber grips on the bottom of each end, impervious to moisture.

Q: How much does the chair actually weigh? Is it really 5 pounds ?

The curved Transfer board weighs 4 to 5 pounds. The chair weighs about 8 pounds.
