Is this also a protective case for the iPad?

Not the back. Only the front screen. There are back-only cases that you can add to this keyboard cover to get protection all the way around. Search for slim-fit rear cases for iPad 7. Hope that helps!

What's the difference between this and the 'older' version, the slightly less dark smart keyboard?

I brought the older version of this keyboard but it wasn’t compatible with my iPad (seventh generation,32gb) as the keyboard doesn’t lay flat. This one fits. Older keyboard reviewers also mentioned specific models that only work with it.
