Anyone know which chipset this one uses? i've had some issues with the rtl9210 in the past...

While I am not sure of the chipset, It really is not worth spending your money on. It gets very hot and deformed the plastic. I returned mine after the first few hours of usage.

Can you update the firmware of a drive? for example will western digital dashboard detect a wd drive or does the os see a generic enclosure?

No, your system will recognize this as the chipset of the adapter itself and will not be able to identify the drive. This also applies to using cloning software provided by Seagate, WD, etc - the software will fail because it cannot identify the mfg of the drive.
