Poor English translation
I appreciate what the translator tried to do here, however the book is difficult to read.

A vital piece of Judo history in poor English.
This is the first "English" translation of Jigoro Kano's school text book for Judo. Given that, it is a vital read for all judoka. It is very strong on philosophy and the personal development side of Judo and shows the tandoku-renshu and kime-shiki of the seiryoku-zenyo-kokumin-taiiku areas that the Kodokan appears to be refreshing. The study of ukemi has advanced a little since the book was written and the sections on nage-waza and katame-waza are pretty basic. The main problem is the simultaneous translation into Spanish, which is great for Spanish speakers, but makes the layout a little awkward. The weakest part for English speakers is the quality of the English. It is really not up to publication standard - there is even a "thou" in there, I assume it was done by the same translator as for the Spanish, who is not a native English speaker - a valiant attempt but there must be many thousands of educated native English speaking judoka in the world who could have assisted to make the text more readable. If you are a Judo aficionado buy it it; is not a book for the average player.

English translation is atrocious
It's an interesting book for anybody interested in the history of Judo, jiu jitsu or martial arts. Unfortunately the English translation is so bad to be almost useless to interpret the technical instructions Kano SHihan wrote. I speak Spanish but not well enough to comment on the Spanish translation. It's very unfortunate but I wouldn't recommend it.

Grandísimo trabajo
Magnífica obra, un texto que puede cambiar la opinión de lo q se entiende por judo actualmente. Una obra increíble. De lo mejor que he leído.

Historically revealing and valuable.
If you want what Kano wanted in his Judo, this is a must read. The "quality" of the physical book is good but could have been better. The Spanish on the top of each page a little distracting (as the English at the bottom could be for Spanish readers) but great if you're working on the language. NOT really a problem, so don't be put off! This material is good for practitioners of Judo and Ju Jutsu alike. You need to actually study it, there's a lot there. It compliments "Kodokan Judo: Atemi Waza" nicely. Historically valuable and the information profound to make the art real, an actual martial art not just a sport.
