1,100 miles on the AT -- works great every time!
I have used this setup with Smartwater bottles for over 1,100 miles on the Appalachian Trail (so far) and would not hike without it. Simply put, it is a convenient lightweight hydration solution that works extremely well.I did swap-out the bite valve for a Camel Pak one (personal preference) and added a Sawyer fast-fill adapter so the bite valve can be disconnected, and the hose connected directly to my water filter for fast filtering (see pictures). The only improvement I can think of is when filling via the hose I need to loosen the cap to let the air out of the bottle for a fast fill (the valve is one-way -- it lets air in as you drink and stops water from leaking out). I have also seen hikers insert a water filter into the hose, fill their bottles with "dirty" water, then use the hose to pull it through the filter as they drink. It's a very fast-hiking way of using this.Pros:- Lightweight and Durable- Works with common sized bottles- Built-in air valve prevents spills while letting air into the bottle- Using bottles in a backpack’s side pockets means not drinking warm water because the heat from your back is next to the water bladder inside your pack- If your water bladder fails you lose your water and your sleeping bag, etc., get soaked; if a bottle on the side fails, you have a second one -- plus you can easily and cheaply replace it at the next trail townCons:- This item is hard to get sometimes (was surprised to see them back on Amazon), but they do last a long time. It’s a solid system, well worth it.

Does not screw together with its own parts!
The small brown nozzle does not even attach to the brown wide mouth cap that comes with it. It pops off repeatedly on its own and will not even stay attached longer than a few seconds. The threads are not deep enough. Disappointing, would have been a great product, but with cheap manufacturing, is completely useless. Check the other one star reviews, I’m not the only one this happens to.

Cheap and effective
I was somewhat apprehensive that some thing that’s an expensive would actually work on my backpacking trips to make staying hydrated easier. I was pleasantly surprised that this little gadget was easy to use and very effective. It prevented me from having to ask people to hand me my water the whole trip. Sometimes I still forgot to drink because I wasn’t used to it being so readily available to me. I would definitely recommend this little gadget.

Can work well, but when it fails you have no water
I bought two of these. I planned to use them on Nalgene wide mouth water bottle because I have a bunch of those. The design of the SmarTube is to put a large adapter cap on the Nalgene bottle and then screw the SmarTube small cap with the valve and tube into that. But after a month or so the threads stripped out. So even though my water bottle is upright with no load on the cap, the small cap pops off and then the sloshing from my walking causes the water to leak out of the bottle and soak my backpack. And leave me without water. One seems to work and the other failed. So YMMV.

This item is great
I took this with me on my long walk through Spain in the Camino de Santiago a few weeks ago. I absolutely needed and enjoyed using it. Was so much easier to store a larger water bottle in my back behind me and not have to stop to drink. I noticed that the tube that goes into the bottle became discolored from the electrolyte tablets I was using, but this in no way effected the use or cleanliness of this product. What was at first a curiosity has become a necessity on future trips.

Leaked non stop
I wanted to like this system but two major problems. The threads are not deep enough to actually secure the system to a nalgene bottle so the cap keep popping off, and after I switched it to a smaratwater bottle, the mouth piece leaked my entire hike despite lots of problem solving. My whole side and sleeve was soaked, not to mention losing 1/4 of my water supply.

Great for backpacking
I got this for an extended backpacking trip (philmont scout camp). This is much more practical than a typical reservoir, when water sources are intermittent and it's a pain to get a reservoir out of the pack to fill. This device allows you to attach to a Nalgene bottle (or other sized bottle), and you can easily switch it to other bottles as needed.

Replace bite valve
Works well with wide mouth bottle. I swapped the bite valve for a straight on/ off valve.
