When we changed outside door bell button, we lost the bell tone and have only the buzzer. How do we get a nice tone back?

I'm guessing that the old push button was either dim or not lit at all, and new outside push button glows...If that's the case, I think your transformer is a bit weak, possibly due to the slight increase in load with new button's light. Buzzing is a key clue - the solenoid (electrically powered plunger whose motion would cause the ding dong) is sitting there vibrating, instead of moving cleanly.Assuming your doorbell is a 16V model, Nutone makes a slightly more powerful doorbell transformer, model C907 (Sold on Amazon) - this one can handle two or three doorbells, so it has enough oomph to handle normal loads... Changing a transformer may require a licensed electrician in your area, so please proceed with caution.Good luck!

What can of transformer does it require: ac or dc?

It uses a 16V 10VA transformer, Nutone/Broan c905 doorbell transformer if you want the OEM part, available on Amazon. Do not use a different voltage, you unit either will not work if it a lower voltage or it will burn up your unit if it is a higher voltage. Do not use a DC transformer, you unit will not work on DC voltage.

Does this unit need a diode at the button?

if you use the 16 volt power supply for this unit, you don't need a diode
