True Detective: The Complete First Season (VIVA/RPKG/DVD) Touch darkness and darkness touches you. HBO presents Season 1 of this searing drama series about two detectives--played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson--and their epic hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. In 2012, Martin Hart (Harrelson) and 'Rust' Cohle (McConaughey), for reasons not immediately revealed, are interviewed separately by investigators about their most notorious case: the macabre 1995 murder of a prostitute by a possible serial killer with disturbing occult leanings. As they look back on the case, Hart and Cohle's personal backstories and often-strained relationship come into focus, all connected by one thing: their shared obsession to hunt down the killer. The supporting cast includes Michelle Monaghan, Kevin Dunn, Tory Kittles, Michael Potts, Elizabeth Reaser, Shea Whigham, Clark Peters, Jay O. Sanders, Alexandra Daddario and Lili Simmons. Review: So good! - This HBO miniseries is one of the most important pieces of film done in the last decade. The story is riveting, the acting is 1st rate, and it is directed like an art film....beautifully shot. I've watched the miniseries several times and really wanted to have a copy for myself. I highly recommend it. Review: The Best - Likely the Best series ever made. Season 2 is a step back but watchable. And Season 3 is nearly just as good as the original. Don't even bother with Season 4, it's a joke

A Masterpiece
“We’re the bad men who keep the bad men from the door.” I love this first season. The overall collaboration of those involved was truly remarkable, with writing , direction and acting all superb. Original. Riveting and intricate and just as fascinating after three viewings. An absolute masterpiece. Some folks seemed to have missed the true substance. The crime story presented here is secondary to a deep, merciless exploration of the male Jungian shadow. These two men are often courageous, but also desperately lonely, scared, sexually lost, even violent and exploitive. Rust is a fascinating character, deeply wounded and cynical, self-centered and heroic, all at the same time. His intellectual defenses and deep convictions trap him in a life of addiction, isolation and despair. The women around these friends are more projections of their damaged souls than real people—not because of sexism in the screenplay, but because these two screwed up characters cannot properly relate to any of them. Marty is also beautifully written and played—a morally lost man who betrays himself and his family and is slowly forced to accept his own hypocrisy. The dark horror overtones layering this first season mostly end up as a powerful metaphor for the banality of evil, but before taking us on one hell of a ride. Deep stuff and very entertaining as well.

Binge-worthy
Hands down the best season of this show. McConaughey and Harrelson make a great duo. It's dark and sadistic but also kind of funny. Very intelligent with great cinnamonography. I highly recommend.

Required Viewing
This is the single greatest season of any tv show that has ever aired. We have reached the pinnacle of human achievement so now we can go extinct with total contentment.

THE BEST OF THE "TRUE DETECTIVE" MINISERIES FRANCHISE
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson star as Rustin "Rust" Cohle and Martin "Marty" Hart, respectively, two former Louisiana state homicide investigators who find themselves caught up in a spine-tingling investigation of a cold case that had baffled law enforcement personnel for many years. This is a must-see!
