Meze 99 Over-Ear Headphones (Maple Silver)

These are some of the most beautiful headphones I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. The imaging is spectacular. Bass is balanced. Treble hits perfectly. Everything is controlled and a joy to hear. These are the most reference headphones I've heard, and are much even than the bass-heavy Audio Technica ATH-M50X's.

For those that won't read the full review: if you were sitting on the fence about purchasing these headphones, they are a definite buy. You may not like them at first, especially if you prefer your bass sitting behind the vocals, but I suggest not listening to your other headphones for a while before popping these around your ears. You will enjoy them.BACKGROUND:I have several headphones, all planar magnetics from higher price points. These all have a certain sound signature that I prefer: great midrange with vocals that stand out, lots of slam on the bass but sits just behind the vocals, and a treble that isn't too sharp. I was looking for a good pair of closed back headphones for around the $300 or less price point and stumbled across this product on the head-fi forums. Therefore I decided to give these puppies a go and ordered them. At first I was not going to leave a review because I was unhappy with the sound, due to it having a heavier bass that muddles the vocals.The problem with having listened to certain types of headphones for years is that if you do a direct comparison, the new type of headphones will always be a shock to the ears. Therefore after having a good night sleep and having separated myself from my various planars, I decided to give them another test. I decided to just listen to the Meze 99 classics without any undue influence from the other headphones and the following is my assessment. I am now a very happy customer.SOUND:The headphones can produce lots of detail in the sound: vocals are strong, still sometimes muddied by the bass on a track. If you are listening closely to your music, each instrument is represented cleanly and are clearly distinguishable from one another. If you are just listening to the tracks while doing other tasks such as working or reading, you will find yourself occasionally pausing, staring off into space, and just enjoying the music. These headphones like many other audiophile ones, usually much more expensive by an order of magnitude of 3x-10x the price point, will just transport you to another place surrounded by great music.COMFORT:The headphones are light and can be worn for hours without any fatigue or pinching with one caveat: I have medium sized ears and can't speak for my fellow listeners with large ears. For those of you with larger noggins and ears, if you decide to get a pair, should write a review describing how they fit.BUILD:The Meze 99 Classics really do have an incredible build. They are striking to look at. They have an incredible finish and the wood used, is exquisite. With good care they look like they will be enjoyed for several years.FINAL ASSESSMENT:The Meze 99 Classics are beautiful to look at, built well, and are very comfortable for listeners with medium to small ears. At the end of the day they will be on your head, and unless you constantly look at yourself in the mirror, what does it matter how a pair of headphones look if the sound quality isn't great. I can tell you that they sound fantastic. If you are only used to big box company products or these will be your first pair of hi-end headphones then you will be amazed. If you are an audiophile and are looking for a pair of closed back headphones(to save those around you from sound leakage) that are priced <= $300, you should try them. Great all around sound, bass is good, mids and highs the meze 99 classics excel. If you want head phones in this price range look no further.

Amazing wooden headphone!

I love almost everything about these headphones.Great, Quality and Styling. One major negative is you can't wear them for very long before the earpads start hurting. I contacted Meze and they are sending me larger ear pads. Great Customer Service

Difficile de donner un avis qui soit le plus pertinent et le plus approprié pour un casque.Chaque utilisateur se fait sa propre opinion en fonction de l'impression que procure l'utilisation d'un casque hifi.Ce qui me plait chez le Meze 99-Désign-Finition-Agréable sensation d'un casque que l'in oublie en le portant-Bon rendu audio (n'étant pas un grand mélomane)J'utilise ce casque régulièrement pour une lecture-Ipod touch d'Apple-DAC HA200 d'Onkyo-Fiio X1 IIJe recommande ce casque .

Hallo,Da dies meine erste Rezension ist, hoffe ich das diese auch anderen Musikliebhabern hilfreich ist.Als treuer AKG Kunde schaute ich mich dort natürlich wieder zuerst um da meine geschlossenen AKG550 sich dem Ende neigten.Kopfhörer gibt es ja bekanntlich wie Sand am Meer aber ich wollte neben etwas elegantem auch den passenden mit perfektem Klangpanorama.Nach vielen Recherchen auf EU/US Hifi Testseiten und Musik Foren bin ich auf den Meze Classic gestoßen und habe aufgrund der guten Resonanz diesen nun gekauft.Der Kopfhörer kommt schon in einer sehr edlen und hochwertigen Verpackung daher. Das Hardcase ist sehr gut verarbeitet und auch nicht zu groß. Der "Anpressdruck" des Kopfhörers ist nicht zu stark aber auch nicht zu schwach so das dieser bei etwas schnelleren Bewegungen gleich vom Kopf fällt. Das Design ist gelungen sehr elegant. Die Ohrmuscheln umschmiegen ebenfalls sanft die Ohren.Beigelegt sind ein 3m Kabel für Zuhause und ein 1,5m für Unterwegs welches ein Mikrofon und einen "Ton Start/Stop Knopf" besitzt. Da ich einen "FiiO X3 Gen2" als High Resolution Musikplayer benutze, kommt schon mein erster Kritikpunkt. Der Tonregler wird nur von Telefonen erkannt (getestet mit meinem Blackberry Classic) aber nicht von reinen Musikplayern. Wenn ich telefonieren will, muss ich somit extra den Player aus der Hosentasche nehmen und pausieren.Nun kommen wir aber zu dem wichtigsten, dem Klang ! Dieser ist unglaublich klar und kräftig. Wer auf kräftiges Krachen des Schlagzeuges und Bass steht, ist hier genau richtig !Getestet hatte ich Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer, Laid Back - Bakerman, Aerosmith - Crazy, Christina Aguilera - Hello, Adele - Rolling in the Deep jeweils auf dem "FiiO X3 Gen 2" sowie dem Musikplayer "VOX" unter Apple OSX mittels FiiO im DAC Modus und im Lossless "FLAC" Audioformat.Somit ist ein recht breites Soundspektrum von Rock, Pop & Vokal abgedeckt. Jeder hat so seine Vorlieben aber ich empfehle die Equalizer "More Highs" sowie "Headphone". Hier kommt neben dem satten Klang der Instrumente und Bass der Gesang sehr gut rüber.Der Klang ist so klar, dass man selbst das "Runterzählen" der Musiker am Anfang des Adele Songs hört !Eine Zusammenfassung:Positiv:- Kräftiger Klang welche seine Stärke besonders im Bass-Bereich ausspielt.( vielleicht zu Basslastig für einige. Probehören ist hier A und O )- Gut sitzender Kopfhörer welcher auch nach längerer Tragezeit ( Test 3 Stunden ) nicht störend wirkt.- Edle Verarbeitung- Mikrofon & Tonregler für Telefone- Preis - Braucht sich nicht hinter den großen spezialisierten Tonunternehmen verstecken. Durch das tolle Design und der verbauten Technik spielt man hier ebenfalls mit in der Champions League.- Gute Abschirmung der Außengeräusche- Ohrpads lassen sich tauschenNegativ:- Tonregler funktioniert nicht bei gesonderten Musikplayern- Es gibt keine Beschriftung welche Seite rechts oder links ist. Nur auf einem der beiden Kabel steht ein kleines R.- Bis jetzt kann man Ersatzohrpads nur bei Meze selber bestellen.- Weiche Ohrpolster wie beim AKG701 wünschenswertEine kleine Randnotiz von meiner Seite aus. Ohne passendes Equipment wie ein externer spezieller Musikplayer oder Verstärker (z.B. spezielle USB Soundkarte für den PC) Zuhause, sollte man nicht an einen kauf denken.Diese Kopfhörer spielen ihre Stärke einfach nicht an einem normalen Telefon oder PC mit Klinke aus und wäre somit auch rausgeschmissenes Geld.

Beautiful sound, punchy bass, distinctivly midrange, and pleasent treble and the most important very open good soundstage for closed back headphones, can rivall with semiopen back or even some of the open back headphoes.Design is fanatatic and sound beatiful straight from the smartphones, with better sources the sound is amazing, in short is one of the best headphones in the price range 300-500 euro for closed back.They respond very well with EQ -ing wich is another plus.
