Awesome game.
Great atmosphere. Graphics look great. If you're a fan of FPS, this is worth a look. Especially with how inexpensive "older" games are. I'm way late to the PS5 game and it's fun catching up on all these games now, including these lesser known titles.

Survival horror fun
Don’t know why people hate on this series. I liked it, very immersive, and a little quirky on a good way.

For those not sure about the data on disk
before getting into a review. I do want to point out that the game installs from disk 30GB of data since there is confusion on what is inside the disk. (PS5) Base Game: ~72.2 GB The Two Colonels: ~1 GB Sam’s Story: ~6.4GB Total: ~80 GB 30 GB install allows you to start playing. In the background the system self installs the rest of 70GB. Similar to the PS4 but faster. You will not complete the 30 GB that allows you to start playing in 15 minutes. This is how long t takes to install the rest (as you play or choose to wait for it). The expansion DLC download and install are in a download code. Which isn't needed at the start. Most games since the PS4 era include a code for the rest. You can insert the disk, let it install everything from the disk and hit start. The first install is only to start the game quicker, rather than wait 7-12 minutes to install the rest for the full disk. (how all games operate). Anyways, I bought this purely for the visuals. Not really familiar with background, minus that it's a 3 part story. A buddy of mine has the PS4 version of the game, which is where I saw it. graphically, looks great on the PS4. But on the PS5 its phenomenal. Night and day comparison. 4k/HDR and butter smooth. Snow looks ultra realistic, gleam on guns, and the sound design is top notch. ( I'm a home theater guy lol) I know some have said cut scenes drag to long, but personally, I enjoy them because it explains the situation and helps build the world. For me this works, because I'm not familiar with the past 2 games. I cannot make comparisons on bugs as of writing this, they might have patched it. Only an hour in and I like the story. I was on the fence with this game because I'm not a fan of FPS like COD. Metro feels and looks more polished. The stories different and not the typical 'war' lets invade or period piece shooter.

Ton of potential - countless flaws
While it has some redeeming qualities - Metro Exodus falls flat in many aspects compared previous entries. I’ll note that I played the original few metro games on PC. They were great games. This was over a decade ago. At that time they were graphical show cases and could really flex on a decent graphics card. The gameplay was also consistently fun and engaging in the original titles. This game has some strengths in terms of decent gameplay spread through interesting set pieces in certain parts of the game. However, it also suffers from some monotonous and generic cookie cutter areas spread throughout mostly empty map areas. The gunplay and game mechanics are at times enjoyable and other times frustrating. The shooting mechanics work well enough but I never found a reason to deviate from the same 2 weapons that I’d been using for almost the entire game. There are also some very strange physics at times. You’ll be running at full speed and ascend terrain that only rises a short foot and a half upwards and then shoot off of it like a cannon ball, landing back down to take damage which makes no sense. Another example is walking up stairs and if you stop walking you’ll begin to slide back down as if you were on an ice slide. A final example would be closer to the end of the game I was sneaking through an area with a couple very deadly enemy creatures and when I cleared the objective and attempted to run past them to safety towards the checkpoint, I was nearly cut short due to slightly inclined terrain that seemed to be stopping my character from running. It was as if the terrain was glitching my forward progress because of some sort of broken physics. I had to hit the jump button and stagger the analogue stick in different directions to keep moving. Here are my biggest issues with this game: 1) Most of the textures are absolutely terrible in Metro Exodus. I know 4A is a small company but I can’t fathom how a 2019 release looks this trash on a next gen console. It’s immersion breaking when you’re looking at textures that could be compared to a game from the mid 2000’s. No exaggeration here. It’s not all textures but it’s around 50% that are just complete pixelated garbage. I honestly couldn’t believe how bad some of them were. This isn’t going to matter to everyone but it was disappointing to me. Reading about the ray traced lighting update and given the original games impact in terms of immersive visuals I was extremely let down by the actual product. 2) Glitches and bugs galore. Game design that can leave you trapped and force chapter restarts. Bugged weapon mods that vanish from inventory. Audio bugs. Lighting bugs. Random content that was left in game from unfinished ideas/quests that will leave you confused. Characters and NPC’s stuck in dialogue loops. 3) The DLC that was bundled into this edition of Metro Exodus has major issues. The Two Colonels has numerous bugged Trophies on PS5 including the one for simply finishing the DLC. Several bugs in the Two Colonels DLC are just absurd: the rail gun mod has an audio bug that sounds like your speakers are about to explode. The second bug was a constant Geiger counter noise for the *entire* duration of the DLC. Even in radiation free areas. Through cutscenes, dialogue, safe areas, persistent all the way to the end of the DLC. It was maddening. In the 4 years since they came out - no patches were released. 3) The story fell very flat. I put over 100 hours in and it was a huge shoulder shrug. Voice acting was atrocious. The main female protagonist would occasionally slip out of the Russian accent that she was performing. When Miller’s dialogue came up, half the time, I was saying out loud “can’t wait until this voice actor stops talking”. There was no real interesting back story for any of the supporting cast either. Sam’s Story DLC was good. It still suffered from many of the issues listed above. But it was pretty enjoyable overall. It would be amazing to see a spin off that builds on the ending for this one. The save system for Exodus is not great. You get one “hard save” called a quick save. And you get 3 auto saves with no control over how or when it saves. I gave 3 stars because I feel like 4A could make a great game if it had the resources to do so. This was not the experience I was excited for when I sat down to play. It seems like they wanted to do open world but couldn’t get it done for whatever reason. So they mix on-rails segments in. Something must have gone wrong in executing Metro Exodus. Can’t recommend this game. Hoping the next entry from 4A is leagues better than this title.
