In the grab bag there were mini pcb's with microphones, what do they do?

DIP/SOP-8 adapter It's not a microphone. It's a component that is used to integrate a sop-8 pin connector to a DIP connector so you can plug it into your bread board. Hope this helps.

Do the component leads fit into solderless breadboard? Or are they too thin?

I had moved from Electronics and Hardware to software only a while ago, and recently found myself back in the hardware game. I purchased these to get a decent basic set of components. These are standard components and I use them for prototyping on breadboard all the time. If components are too loose in your breadboard, then it is probably the breadboard not the components. Try different set of holes or get a better quality breadboard. I also purchased several Arduino and Raspberry starter kits to round out the project and will say that those breadboards where not the best overall quality with some rows to tight or to saggy. To that end I purchased a very good quality breadboard with dual Vcc poles and ground. The components from this kit fit exactly the same as the components I get from Digikey.
