The Wombles

When Beresford was writing her books about these early little ecowarriors I was too old – and nowhere near old enough to be able to appreciate books suitable for younger children, as I was at that age where one strives to be sophisticated. By the time The Wombles achieved wider audiences in stage shows, musicals and mass media I had not even realised they had that earlier genesis as a series of beautifully written booksSo………….it has been the chance hearing of them being read on Radio 4 recently that sent me scurrying to the sourceAnd what a delight they are, Each of the characters is beautifully delineated, and the book’s illustrations add to the charm. Each chapter marks a complete story in itself, though there is linear progression, and the book seems perfectly suited to its younger readers – and us much older ones who can appreciate well written children’s classics like this

A beautiful story line that takes us back in time to when life was simple, and still relevant for today.

This is a good book for an introduction to the delightful little creatures who live underground and exist by gathering and using things humans discard, in other words, they recycle human trash. Along with the well-done characterizations of each Womble, this and other books in the series encourage our children to recycle as well by example.Besides loving the sometimes foolish Wombles, my great-grandchildren enjoy the different flavor books written for an English audience offer them. Ms. Beresford writes well in easy to understand language for young children. I would recommend this series highly for reading at bedtime.
