Great product that allows you to send IR signals by piggy-backing off an HDMI cable.
My setup: All of my components (i.e. TiVo Roamio, Yamaha RX-V667, etc) are located in a closet maybe 15 feet away from my TV (Samsung UN60D7000). My TV is in the family room hung on the wall, connected to my receiver via a HDMI 1.4 cable that is run through the wall.I recently purchased a new universal remote (Harmony Home control), which is a great remote, but only transmits via RF. That means that all my stuff in the closet receive a signal just fine (RF signal from Remote to Harmony IR repeater/base in closet), but since the remote no longer has an IR blaster on the front, I couldn't control my TV with my new remote. That's where the Monoprice IR Extender over HDMI came into play.I installed one end of the product at the monitor out HDMI port on my receiver and the other end at the end of the HDMI cable that runs through the wall and into my TV. I setup the IR receiver and transmitter that come with this product in front of the Harmony Hub so that it picks up the IR signals there and then it transmits it to the other end of the HDMI cable to the IR transmitter. I had to attach the included transmitter just to the left of the IR receiver on the TV. It worked great! One important note: For those who already have IR blasters (i.e. the ones that come with the Harmony, or elsewhere) I was not able to get them to work with this product. For some reason they cancelled out the video signal that ran over the HDMI cable (i.e. the TV could not detect a signal any longer, which is a problem if you want to watch your TV). As soon as I attached the receiver and blasters that came with the product, everything was good (the receiver and blaster are the two things that have cables attached to them in the product picture.)

Worth the money for a simple IR solution.
This worked flawlessly out of the package. I have purchased Monoprice products before and have not been let down. I was a little skeptical about this purchase since I had never heard of IR over HDMI cable but I am pleasantly surprised at the simplicity of this device. On inspection it seems to have been manufactured with some care. You have to make the switches on the hdmi connectors are on IR and be sure to have the correct ends in right place. There are TX (transmit) and RX (receive) IR connectors with the device. Each has to be in the correct location in order to work. The labeling is a bit hard to read so take care when plugging in the IR extenders. If you are using this on a device with several HDMI inputs with cables plugged into each, you may want to make sure there is enough room for the HDMI portion of this product to fit in your device. The IR HDMI adapter is much larger than your average size HDMI cable, meaning it will take up more space in width than just an HDMI cable plugged in. You may need to get a short HDMI extender cable if this is the case for you. I gave this four stars only because I have no idea how durable it is and how long it will last. There does not appear to be any degradation of the video or audio passing through the HDMI cable.

Simple - it just doesn't work.
Perhaps I received a lemon, in which case, it would show insight to incredibly poor quality assurance.However..... I spent several days trying different possibilities- From my interior wiring (Extremely high end), all the way down to using some cheap hdmi cables and only having them 3 feet away from the receiver. I simply couldn't get it to work with reliable/ reasonable results.Harmony/ Logitech has some really good options at very reasonable prices that actually work. Even if you ARE able to get it to finally work after a FULL weekend of having to "Fiddle" with it, is the price difference actually worth your time and effort???I returned them fast and easily thanks to the extensively wondrous thing that is Amazon "Prime". Don't have it? Get it!! It's definitely something I can whole heartedly recommend - and I don't even use the streaming (Netflix is still better)!!Anyway, save yourself some stress and frustration and just get a better product. This one simply isn't worth the effort.

Perfect for XBox One Kinect use where Kinect IR cannot reach and function audio/video devices' on and off features.
I have a Sharp 90" hdtv and have my XBox One Kinect mounted on top. Because of the IR sensor on the bottom being tucked back in the bottow-back area, the XBox One was unable to turn on my tv (as it'll turn on or off, all your audio/video devices), from its top mounted position. At first, I was a bit skeptical on if I could make this work, as it needs an HDMI cable to function. I use one HDMI from my Pioneer audio receiver to the tv. I hooked up the IR receiving end to the front of the Kinect with the 2-sided stick tape this came with, ran it down the back of the tv to the hdmi input, and the hdmi is basically a pass-through.I did the same on the other end of the HDMI cable at the receiver, and ran the IR sender end stuck just in front of the IR are of the hdtv. Now vocal and controlled commands via the XBox easily function all my devices, including turning on and off my tv.Extender is black, which helps blend in with your audio/video devises so as to not be easily visible. Double sided stick tape is not great, and would love a better and more secure option possibly via 3M, which is what I ended up doing as the tape that came with the extender failed after a week.

This item did not work unfortunately over my Atlona HDMI extender w/ CAT6
I initially thought this item I received was defective, but it was not. It just does not work while using it in conjunction with my Atlona HDMI extender over CAT6 -- that was my desired application. The length of the CAT6 cable did not matter; I tried 100 ft and 6ft. Also, I tried with the IR extender with both IR mode and CE modeHowever, I did get it to work with HDMI cables (In other words, w/o an HDMI extender). I'll give it a 4 since that worked. Taking one star away since it should work with the HDMI extender. I did decide to keep the product, since I may have another application for it over a 25 foot HDMI cable. The Atlona HDMI extender works very well for sending 1080p video and audio by the way. I confirmed perfect working order at 100 ft over CAT6 sending from my Yamaha receiver. Too bad it wont send my injected IR signal with this little device.Honestly, I'm not sure if Atlona is the problem or if this IR extender is just not meant to go over CAT6 and or be used with any HDMI extender. I may call Atlona to get their answer.

Love it!
I recently mounted my new 4k above my fireplace and I wanted a completely wire free look. I ran power, HDMI, and Cat-5 down to a recessed media panel to accomplish this. I fished the other end of the wires down into my garage where I have all of my networking equipment set up. I completed the project and thenn realized that I had completely forgotten about IR for the cable box. I didn't want to have to take the TV down off the wall and fish yet another wire down the fireplace and the garage wall. I looked into the wireless extenders, but they were both too bulky for the clean look I was going for and the reviews left a lot to be desired. I came across the Monoprice IR Over HDMI solution and decided to give it a try. The installation was a snap. A lot of reviews here complain that the kit comes with no instructions, but the instructions are detailed on the product page right here on Amazon. Even if there were no instructions, it's a really simple and common sense installation. The RX (receiver) section goes in the room where the remote will be used (where your TV is located), and the TX (transmit) section goes on the end with the device you're wanting to extend the IR to. The longest part of the whole installion was getting the backing off the double sided tape that's included for the transmitter and receiver. This product has been working solid for about 2 weeks now and I plan to buy 3 more kits for future projects in each of the bedrooms in my home. Being able to combine the IR over an HDMI cable is brilliant as it saves from having to run a dedicated IR extender. There are reviews here that say they received lemons, but I'm not convinced that they might have installed them backwards or positioned the transmitter end to the wrong spot on the device they were trying to control. However, receiving a lemon doesn't shroud the name of this company or the products they produce. If this was the case, nobody would be in business because every company has had a lemon at some point.

UPDATE: Works well if they send you all the actual required pieces
-----UPDATE-----Ok so the first time I ordered this everything was fine and working great. So I decided to order another one for a different TV. Monoprice sent me a kit with 2 receivers (RX) when they should have sent me 1 reciever (RX) and 1 transmitter (TX). And remember this is a kit, you can't order anything in it separately. I was annoyed but proceed to order another hoping that I could get the right product and just return the mismatched kit. Well, shocker, but they screwed up again and sent another incorrect kit. Again 2 receivers and no transmitter. I've talked to their support and was told to send the kit back and receive a refund. I don't want a refund I want a transmitter so that I can actually use one of these stupid kits. I'm afraid to order again because so far i've had a 33% chance of getting a working product.-----END UPDATE-----Works great for me. Just make sure you do your research, the devices need to oriented correctly (sender/receiver), also the sender device needs to have power to it (TV/receiver powered on) in order for it to transmit the IR signal. I took off a star because of this. I'd like the option to at least connect an external power supply if there isn't another way around this.Works perfectly for my situation with no noticeable lag. Perfect for if you already went through the trouble of running long runs of HDMI and now need to send IR to/from the same places.

An affordable solution for IR extender
I have a comcast cable box in an a/v closet and this product works as advertised. The HDMI cable I'm using is 30'. No delays in signal. Works great. My only minor dislikes are the plugs from the IR receiver that connect to the 3.5 mm jack which is off the side of the hdmi adapter. So it's makes for a difficult work around if you have another hdmi input right next to it or a power cord. The easy solution if it is in the way of any inputs is to invest in a HDMI extender cable (male/female) and you'll be just fine. Also because my purchase came with Amazon "frustration free packaging" I did not receive any instruction booklet. So at first, I did not realize the IR receivers were different. One is meant to receive a signal from remote and the other is to transmit signal to source/cable box. See the arrows on top of the IR receivers to know which one is which.I'm curious if anyone has used this product for Playstation 3 controllers and if works. I would like to be able to hide the video game consoles in the closet too.

Great product
Simple to install, works on my Motorola cable box. I wanted to be able to watch all my TV channels in my bedroom so I bought a hdmi splitter, 60 ft of hdmi cable w/ redmere technology and this ir extender and it all works great. I laid it all out and plugged it all in to see if the system would work and to my surprise it worked better than I expected. I was able to pull the cable out of my bedroom wall and fish the hdmi cable in, then connect the ir receiver to the hdmi cable, then plug it into the hdmi port on the TV. I ran the IR receiver cord up behind the TV so the IR receiver eye could rest on the top of the TV. The Ir transmitter is downstairs plugged into the other end of the hdmi cable and that is connected to my splitter. The Ir transmitter is positioned off to the side in front of the cable box so it can do its job. To make this work you need to have the proper ir codes programed in your remote controls so your devices can be turned on/off, select channels, watch on demand or DVR programs. Your stuck watching the same programs on both TVs from the cable box but I bought a 4 x 2 splitter so my PS3 is hooked up for Netflix and I still have 2 more ports that could be used for blu ray or ?. I have only been using it a couple weeks so I will update you all at a later date.

Don't Buy This Product
I had my reservations about purchasing electronics from an internet based company, but it was recommended from a friend. It turns out my reservations were justified. This IR Extender over HDMI simply did not work at all. I had everything set up exactly the way it was supposed to be (ie. receiver into TV, transmitter into device) and absolutely nothing worked. I troubleshooted and read multiple suggestions on the Monoprice website. I racked my brain and switched everything around multiple times, but nothing I did worked. I went and bought a regular IR Extender with a power supply from Radio Shack. I spliced the receiver into CAT5 and ran it to the repeater and it worked perfectly. I then took the receiver and transmitter from Monoprice and spliced them in exactly the way I did the system from Radio Shack. It did not work. Either the receiver or the transmitter or both from Monoprice did not work. I wasted money and countless hours trying to figure out why this set up was not working, only to find out the equipment was simply defaulty.

UPDATE - Couldn't Get It to Work with AT&T UVerse Motorola VIP2250 DVR
I finally confirmed that the Motorola VIP2250 box (and probably the VIP series of boxes) IS different, in that it uses an obscure, narrow-band IR protocol known as RC-MM. Consequently, many "universal" remote controls don't work (properly) with it, and certain IR extenders (including the IR-over-HDMI variety) won't work, either. The signal, as delivered to the box, is not a sufficiently faithful reproduction of the required signal, and the box either ignores it, or mis-interprets it. This explains why it worked find with my DVR (which uses a more conventional IR protocol) but wouldn't operate my VIP2250 at all.Sigh. Well, another strikeout. Anyway, it's not the fault of the IR extender, which I suspect is working exactly as designed (hence, I'm raising my review to 4 out of 5). I'll keep looking for a workable solution. Onward and downward... ;-)

Works perfectly for my situation!
Have added a TV in our living room, connected to the cable box in the den. To avoid buying a splitter (which seem to be cheaply built and burn out), the den TV has been connected to the RGB HD connections on the cable box, the new TV is connected using a $15 40' HDMI cable. You should try your cable box before buying parts, as some cable boxes will only output on one connection! Ours works and shows the exact same content on both outputs, so no HDMI splitter needed. The last piece of the puzzle was getting the remote to work. Got this IR extender, as it eliminates either running another cable or using a more costly RF transmitter setup. It all works wonderfully, over one cable, for $40! A buddy uses Monoprice HDMI splitters and switches and recommends their products, too.FYI, people reviewing here and elsewhere have griped about the plug location on the HDMI connector. On my LCD TV and cable box it is no issue and doesn't block the adjacent port, but I can see how it might cause some problems for some. Check out the pictures here and on the manufacturers website, look at your hardware and determine if this will work for you. Don't complain and give bad reviews if you buy something that you could have researched but didn't.

Perfect for a wall mounted TV setup
This HDMI IR extender is amazingly simple and effective. It come with no instructions, but really doesn't need any. If you follow the arrows on the extenders, putting the in arrow as the receiver and the out arrow as the emitter, and keep both switches set to IR, then it works perfectly. Two things to consider.1) the IR plug goes into the side of the HDMI plug, so in a TV setup where the HDMI plugs are all in a line, and you are using all plugs, you may only have one plug you can use. On my Sony, HDMI1 was what I had to use.2) Most importantly, this unit takes power from the HDMI signal. For that reason, you must have at least the sending or receiving unit turned on. For my wall mounted TV setup, the TV is turned on directly, and the components are hidden. I had no problem because the TV is turned on first. But if you wanted this to to turn on a remote component that is the first to be powered on, you will likely not be successful. This may not work for everyone, but for a wall mounted TV setup, it is perfect.

Great simple device...just what I needed
Since there were no instructions, I had to play around with it for a bit. Works great once I figured out a couple of things. It seems the input and output on the hdmi adapters matter which direction they go...I had to try several different ways before getting it right, since my setup has my hdmi going to a wall plate on both ends, so I had a choice which side of the wires to put them on. It only worked if I wired it as if I had one long cable, so one adapter directly on the splitter in the basement (transmitter) and the other on the directly on the tv upstairs (receiver). Also make sure both adapters have the switch set to "IR", as "CEC" according to Monoprice website basically means the IR is off and the adapter is in pass-through mode.No lag going though 35 ft hdmi via wall plates plus 6 ft cables on both ends of the wall plates. Doesn't seem to effect picture quality at all either. On the transceiver side I have it pointing at the back wall in the basement so it bounces off the back wall then to the front of the cable box. Works well and I can hide it better in the entertainment center that way :-)

Works great, but watch your space requirements
The product itself works as advertised. I put the IR blaster in my cabinet and pointed it at a door covered with aluminum foil. The foil reflects the IR signal to all the devices inside. The receiver works great with my LCD TV. I sit about 10 feet from the TV and it picks up the signal no problem. One problem, and it should be obvious just from the product picture. The way that the IR receiver/blaster cable hooks up to the HDMI adapter means that you'll need a lot of free space around your HDMI plug. If you don't have extra space (for example, if one end of the wire connects to an HDMI splitter) then you will need some swivel adapters to give your plug more flexibility. You should check your setup before you buy, and maybe buy some just in case anyway.Lastly, the product doesn't come with any instructions, but it's pretty simple to set up. Just remember that "RX" is receive and "TX" is transmit. Set both adapters to "IR" and you should be good to go. If you need to troubleshoot you can use a phone camera to test the transmitter, most digital cameras should pick up IR signals and display them as a white/red light.
