a great buy and value, tested
I got this air conditioner yesterday and will give my review and tests on it now, first I already own a whynter 122 model which is 7000BTU DOE and 12000 BTU ashre. it has worked wonderfully for a year now. NOW to THIS modelarc 148ms. this arrived yesterday with the bottom of the box bent up, UPS is hard as hell on products they ship, a horrible carrier. HOWEVER NO damage was done to the unit itself. installation was easier than on my previous duel hose whynter. it took me 20 minutes to get it all set up. THEN I waited 4 hours for the freon to settle before turning it on as whynter suggests. I have this in a 28 X 16.5 foot living room . NOW the tests. First it cools like crazy!, in a room at a hot 84 degrees I got a outlet temp of 58 degrees which is 26 dregees below room temp which is VERY Good!. ( air condition pros state that a good/OK air conditioner outlet temp thats 15-20 degrees below room temp is good, Less than 14 degrees and something is wrong with the AC). it cooled my room down 1 degree in just 5 minutes!. . NEXT, power draw. this AC draws the rated 11.3 amps and 1300 watts on high with the AC going full blast. fan only is 77 watts. NOTE!, if you have this hooked up to a 15 AMP circuit I reccommend no other lights or applience be hooked on the circuit. for a 20 AMP circuit you can run some lights ot a TV on the same circuit. ( NOTE: Im not an electrician or a AC repairman, these are my suggestions from personal experience). NEXXT....sound level. this unit is loud. on high it generates 62DBA at 4 feet from the unit in a live room with NO carpet or curtins. on low it generated 59DBA at 4 feet. HOWEVER at 10 feet from the unit watching TV its not too loud but I do have to turn the volume up a bit. for sleeping this noise should be great for sleeping as its a whuiute noise type noise. in a room with carpet, drapes and lots of heavy furnature or a bed it will be quieter as these thing soak up the noise.. againm my room is "live" and soaks up very little sound. reliability?? I dont know as Ive only had it one day, but with proper care its expected to last 7-10 years. overall this was a GREAT buy at $387 that I paid!. especially for a 14000 BTU ashrea/10300BTU DOE unit. NOTE 2!!!!: do not worry about whether an AC is one or two hose!, the ONLY thing that matters is the BTU DOE rating, the BTU ASHREA rating us useless for portable AC's.

Very good ACs and very helpful customer service!
I've purchased two Whynter ARC-148MS 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioners to help cool my NYC apartment, and I've been very happy with their performance. They are very easy to set up, with almost no work involved. They work well for a single bedroom apartment, which they cool effectively for all but the hottest and muggiest days of summer. They require little maintenance, basically rinsing off two filters once a summer and maybe checking the condensation collector drain if it's very humid out. Before shutting off the unit while cooling, I do recommend switching from cool mode to fan mode for about a minute, which I think is easier on the compressor and coils and might help the lifetime of the unit. The second unit I bought last summer stopped working after only a few uses. While the unit was still within its 1 year warranty, I was certainly dreading the issue of dealing with customer service. But I was very pleasantly surprised. Through email, I communicated with Jof Y. and he was extremely helpful in walking me through some checks and tests. We very quickly diagnosed the compressor as the problem, and he had a new unit sent immediately and free of charge! Moreover, I did not have to send the broken unit back, which was a real timesaver. What a great experience and a great relief! The replacement unit is working wonderfully over the last month.Overall, the unit itself gets 4 to 5 stars, and Jof and customer service get 6 stars!

Nice portable AC. Cools my medium size bedroom to 68 degrees when its 110 F outside.
This Whynter ARC-148MS portable AC seems to be well built (heavy) and Whynter has been in this business for a long time. I chose Whynter because of this and their US based support. Generally this AC is a typical design (good) with the 5.9 inch exhaust hose I need to plug right into my through-the-wall port. It has a stylish design and cools my medium sized bedroom down to about 68 F when it’s 110 F outside here in the Nevada desert. I believe my success with cooling is due to my optimized hot air exhaust and the fact my bedroom is inside a home with central air so it doesn’t have to work so hard.I've had portable air conditioners for 15 years and I've learned a few things. Most importantly keep your exhaust hose as short as possible and as straight as possible. Rather than mess with my windows and all the issues that brings I elected to go straight out through a wall to the outside. To do this I bought online a 6 inch exhaust vent complete with wind damper and a bug screen. This provides the optimal exhaust path with the least resistance so heat is pushed outside efficiently. (Luxury Metals Co.)Don't be tempted to use a "dryer vent" as these are typically only 4 inch diameter and too small for your AC. If you do or if you use a long, snaking hose with many bends you'll be saying "Why isn't my new AC working as well as I had hoped. I expected more cooling". Once installed I caulked it and painted it to match my house. Then just simply plug your 5.9 inch diameter AC hose into it. SEE PHOTOSThe automatic moisture removal through the hot exhaust works well and I see little or no water at the drains. Of course it helps that our desert climate has low humidity. The only issue I had was the first Whynter AC arrived damaged due, in my opinion, to packaging not robust enough for freight handling. Luckily the replacement arrived OK. I recommend this AC.

Great while it lasted.. only 2 years
I absolutely loved this ac when I got it. Powerful, very cooling in the extreme Colorado Desert heat. Unfortunately, this only lasted 2 years. No matter what I do, it blows hot air. Cleaning the coils, making sure the condenser is clean and working, confirming the exhaust hose length is on the lower side.. Nothing worked. My only conclusion is that the refrigerant is gone, and it shouldn't be after two years. I have no desire to pack this up on my own dime and send it for repairs.Very disappointed, I'm now shopping for a better portable ac.
