Briggs & Stratton 696540 Electric Starter Drive Kit with Roll Pin Retainer

The instruction sheet was very vague! I went on google images and you-tube to make sure I stacked/installed the parts correctly. I installed the gear with beveled edges on top as advised by another customer. Once I get a new battery I'll ops check the starter operation. I'm fixing up an antique Western Auto-Wizard riding lawn-mower.

Fits perfectly! Extra parts for alternative fit

I had a starter for a generator fall apart on everything on the shaft. Old, old, discontinued generator. The numbers on the old starter didn't match anything available. Lots of searching, and no dice. Well the starter motor still spun up. The specs on these parts looked similar. So, I rolled the dice, and now I'm back in business. I ended up not using the shaft, cause all the new parts fit on the old one, and the new shaft was slightly longer. Been working for over a year now, and no problems. Saved me a few hours (even if I could have found an exact starter motor replacement - which I didn't), and was much cheaper than a new motor. Happy with my purchase, would definitely roll those dice again. The parts seem to be somewhat universal.

Excellent replacement product

Was easy to replace my broken starter bezel. Some people complain about the plastic gear but that's what came stock with my Cub Cadet 1020 hydro so there is no difference for me.

In my rush to complete the starter repair I placed the spring under the gear return cup(the black plastic cage thing), not on top as designed. Once the spring retainer clip is installed it a pain to remove. The best method to resolve this is to punch out the roll pin carefully to remove the spring return assembly then use a small flat screwdriver to press the spring retainer clip edges back toward the center away from spring guide inner edge. Then use a punch to tap out the spring retainer clip carefully. I then re-assemble the drive kit correctly on the starter and tested the starter before install. Just trying to pull or pry the spring retainer clip off will like damage the clip or the spring guide. I tried this method for 10 minutes with no luck and realized I needed to try a different method before I damage the drive kit.

I have a 1991 Snapper rear engine riding mower with a Synchro-Balanced 10 HP Power Rider engine model 255707-0128-01. This was a perfect fit exact replacement. I had to take the oil filler tube off and partially remove the bolts on the starter to replace the parts. I used the old cotter pin to hold the top piece on because the new copper one was too thick to push into place. Mine needed replacement because the plastic gear on the old one shredded and needed replacement. Also, the piece above the gear was plastic on the old one and the plastic cracked. I am happy that they replaced that plastic piece with metal.

My riding lawn mower is a 1984 Montgomery Ward model that I bought new. As you might guess I sometimes need parts. This one works well and I can still use my mower. Recommend this company!

Easy to fit and does what it says on the box. Note that unlike the photo the unit I was shipped only had 1 pin - so no spare which was why I bought this version as opposed to competing one. OK you only need one pin to fit it but they are easy to lose/break so a spare would have been nice.

After a couple of replacement pinion gears, the main shaft had worn so much the motor could spin but not move the pinion!Bought and fitted this kit (very easy if you have a pin punch to push the roll pin out of the shaft) and the starter is back to full working order. I hope to get several more years use out of the old Snapper!
