Torelli: Concerto Grosso

Before JS Bach, Vivaldi and Corelli's compositions were known; Torelli was composing concertos for various instruments. In this full (76 minutes) Chandos recording are some fine examples of Torelli's concertos for 1 and 2 violins and for 1 and 2 trumpets. The compositions are 3 movements long consisting, per usual, of 2 fast and one slow. Listening to these works, as played so wonderfully by Simon Standage and the Collegium Musicum, gave me great listening enjoyment.Simon Standage and the Collegium Musicum really play these Torelli compositions superbly with nary a harsh tone just beautiful early Baroque music. Please be aware that Standage and the Collegium are NOT from the "churn it out" and the "sewing machine" school of playing Baroque music. If anything the sound they produce is rather mellow. Don't misunderstand me, there are loads of virtuosity displayed in the fast movements and plenty of "feeling" in the slow; however, all is delivered most beautifully.As I expected Chandos recorded sound is very rich, clear and full. Therefore, if you want to hear some good early Baroque music that is performed in a most lovely manner, buy this disc.

This recording is a lively, joyful, heart rending, intriguing, suspenseful suite of Torelli concertos that will delight and surprise even the most ardent of music lover. The recording itself is flawless, the performances are exquisite (as one would expect from the Collegium Musicum 90), and the mixing and production are done to render a warmth so rarely present in modern digital recording and production. I had never heard of this guy. So I Wiki-d him. Since the price on Baroque music is so low I took a risk. The result is just wonderful: this music is so anonymous I can put this sort of cd all day and all night and I am not bothered by melodic repetitions a la Mozart or Bach. Luv it!

A lot like Handel or Geminiani... good late-Baroque period stuff. Not all trumpet pieces, some good violin works. Most are light and lively, some are slower and more somber. A great introduction to Torelli, circa 1709. The CD plays quite long, and the audio quality is excellent. Great value for the money.

The recording quality is excellent. The music is superb. The sound of the strings is deep and rich at times, subtle and lively as well. Absolutely fantastic.If you are a fan ov barroque classical or Vivaldi this is a must get.

Great album! To bad though, that it doesn't include a complete Op.8, but the other pieces are very enjoyable indeed.

Aus den vielen Aufnahmen, die das Label CHACONNE (aus der Gruppe von Chandos) im Laufe der letzten Jahre schon vorgelegt hat, habe ich eine Aufnahme ausgewählt, die mir beim Probehören besonders vielversprechend erschien. Ich sollte nicht enttäuscht werden, diese Aufnahme übertrifft das normalerweise hohe Niveau in diesem Segment noch einmal deutlich. Die Qualität dieser Einspielung ist von allen Seiten aus betrachtet mustergültig:-Auswahl: Stücke von Torelli gibt es außer im Sektor Gebrauchsmusik eher selten; Stichwort: festliche Musik (die Trompetenkonzerte) oder Weihnachtsklassiker (das Konzert g-moll). Die meisten Konzerte werden sie gar nicht auf CD finden-Ensemble: das COLLEGIUM MUSICUM 90 ist ein herausragendes Ensemble für alte Musik, mutmaßlich das beste englische Ensemble-Solisten: Simon Standage (Mitbegründer) ist ein Barockgeiger hoher Schule; Vergleiche sind unkollegial-Instrumente: die gute Aufnahme und die guten Musiker machen es möglich, die Qualität der Instrumente zu beurteilen; es handelt sich wenigstens bei den Violinen (8 St.) allesamt um Originale, bei den anderen Gruppen um Nachbauten. Die Instrumente befinden sich offenbar in einem exzellenten Zustand, es ist erstaunlich, wie viele gute Instrumente aus dieser Zeit erhalten geblieben sind (das ist ja ein Teil des barocken Musikwunders,- der Instrumentenbau!)-Lokalität und Aufnahme: die überaus freundliche Akustik der All-Saints-Church in London bildet den Rahmen für eine absolut mustergültige, völlig tongetreue Aufnahme im 24Bit-FormatZum letzten Punkt noch eine Anmerkung: ab einem gewissen Niveau ist es praktisch nicht mehr feststellbar, ob die Toningenieure oder Musiker "gepatzt" haben, vorallem wenn sehr viele Streichinstrumente beteiligt sind. In diesem Fall aber läßt sich eindeutig feststellen, dass eine absolut tongetreue (früher sagte man: analoge) Aufnahme zustande gekommen ist.Statt Torellis Konzerte zum Weihnachtsfestbraten abzuspielen, empfehle ich seine Konzerte (in dieser Darbietung) als Testmusik für Highend-Anlagen. Das ist eine schnöde Auszeichnung aber eigentlich der höchste Superlativ, den ich vergeben kann.

Back in the early 1980s I purchased a couple of second hand Mono LPs from the late 1950s containing Torelli’s concertos, from a now long closed Classical music record shop in Brighton..Despite their age, these records showed what an innovative composer Torelli was.This particular Chandos CD is a superb interpretation of these great concertos and reading the notes, on original instruments. The trumpets sound a little softer than the modern variety, being I guess l, valveless.I have just ordered Torelli’s Opus 6 Concertos on another CD to complete the replacement of my earlier recordings...
