Question 1

Two questions: 1. Does this include usable instructions?  2. Does this unit require calibration?

The instructions are in Chinese, however they're available in English on the web (mostly by other sellers on ebay).  It's so simple to operate it really doesn't need instructions, just press 'ON' then press 'PLAY', the 'thermometer' button is scale, which cycles through 3 ranges.  The speaker button selects alarm on/off.  The averaging period is 9 minutes (then the lower display comes on, when the graph completes)  Press 'PLAY' again to reset.

It's certified and has verified calibration (pictures also showing this by other sellers on ebay)  I also checked it myself for sensitivity as to it's energy range for soft X-rays and Beta particles.

Question 2

How do I know if this device will tell me if there is harmful amounts of radiation in the environment after a Nuclear bomb has dropped?

You need a radiation check source.  Intact Smoke detectors don’t work well  because it is a clean alpha particle source and is well shielded.  You can get a slight reading above background if you place the counter back right on opened smoke detector.  DO NOT take the detector apart, anyone asking this question does not know enough to do this safely! If you can find an old thorium lantern mantle, they work very well.  Many new mantles do not use thorium anymore but the thorium mantles work a lot better so they are I demand.  There are many sellers on eBay selling thorium mantles and as any Geiger counter can easily detect then, is hard to lie about this for long.  1930’s orange fiesta ware also works well if you can find sone (it used a uranium compound for color).  You may be able to detect the radioactive material in an intact But you can also just buy a source.  These can include uranium ore or Monazite sand.  You can also find old radium watch dial hands for sale ( do not touch these, keep them in the bag).  And there are always sealed samples sold  for theses uses though they are often very expensive.  You can find them on amazon occasionally, but more often on by eBay, and always at places like United Nuclear.

I would recommend the thorium mantle route.  If I can post a picture I will, but a piece of mantle in a  plastic bag gives me 1.24uSv/hr in a background of 0.12uSv/hr. Using a smoke detector as source 0.19uSv/hr.  Big difference.
