LOADS of potential, but is unfortunately held back by...
The build quality... sort of.Firstly: it has to be said that the D-Pad on this thing feels incredible. It's incredibly tactile, accentuating each individual gate perfectly with a satisfying, subtle click. This is legitimately how fighting game pads SHOULD be designed.Unfortunately, the controller is made for fighting game players, but isn't going to last you that long if you're a lab-monster. Mine has worn out after two months. Unfortunately, it seems as though this controller makes the same mistake as SONY: using rubber contact pads. If you wear out ONE of them, then you are missing 1/8 of your directional inputs. This would be amendable if the pad also had a switch similar to the Hori which allowed it to switch from 8-way to 4-way, to ensure that one diagonal gate being ruined doesn't destroy your experience. However, that would ultimately be a patch for the bigger problem, and this is something we NEED to move past. Hell, guys! It's not even a COST thing! Xbox One controllers, as stiff and bulky as they are, have metal contact pads. There's a happy-medium somewhere that's being approached with this controller, but it unfortunately falters into the territory of flimsiness. This market for fighting game controllers is INCREDIBLY ripe for someone to fill the niche, but unfortunately, nobody has.My HORI may have lasted longer, but the D-Pad was certainly not as precise as MadCatz's while it worked. PowerA attempted a Sega Saturn design, but was also too flimsy.MadCatz has legitimately come the closest design-wise for making the perfect pad for fighting games, but unless they spend their time reading Amazon reviews, NOBODY is going to tap into this design outside the Razer Raion. Frankly, the only reason the Raion can get away with being as expensive as it is is because it's simply a better version of this controller.MadCatz. Guys, I know you haven't been THE go-to gaming peripheral company in a bit, but if all you need is a unique idea, PLEASE relaunch this line of controllers but with BETTER build-quality and DURABLE contact pads. FG players may struggle to articulate this, but I ASSURE you this is what's needed.

Great controller for a competitive fighting game player.
Competitive fighting game player here. I got 2nd at the fall classic using this exact controller, so it can be used at a high level. This has by far the best dpad of any controller I've used. The shoulder buttons are the main problem, especially with the L2 and R2 button being large triggers. The other problem is that the triggers are touching the R1 and L1 buttons, so if you're resting your other fingers on the back of the controller and put pressure on the triggers, it can make pressing R1 and L1 not register.Still, it looks nice and as long as you're aware of the trigger problem you can avoid it. Hopefully if they make future models of this controller the triggers are changed. Otherwise I would rate this better than the Hori Fighting Commander, as the DPad on that one doesn't last and can be iffy on registering inputs. If only you could combine the shoulder buttons of the FC4 and the large face buttons with the DPad of this one and the design aesthetic.

Almost perfect, but still good!
This is a very good controller and I would definitely buy again. No lag, inputs are accurate and on cue, but there are few things that Madcatz has to change for this to be pefect. First off, I do not use the pad, I only use the thumb stick. But what I am suggesting would affect pad players too. First, the controllers are very slippery. I had to use grip tape, and I taped up the sides where my hands had most contact. After that, the controller felt secured in my hands. Second, the top buttons above the trigger buttons R1 and L1 needs to be bigger. They are currently slim buttons and during the heat of battle, the player could miss pushing the button. Third, and this is my biggest gripe; the PS4 button needs to be elsewhere and NOT right next to the thumb stick. I have lost alot of SF5 fights due to my thumb accidentally hitting the PS4 button during intense battles. So Madcatz, please consider these changes on your next release.

this one is definitely better than the newest HORI Fighting Commander
As a user of multiple gamepads, this one is definitely better than the newest HORI Fighting Commander. While I do like the shape of the FC, the stiff d-d-pad turned me away from it. The improved MadCatz d-pad feels comfortable and was quick to get used to for most inputs. The only inputs I found myself struggling with were charge supers/ultras (Guile, Bison in SF4, Decapre in SF4) which took some time getting used to. The shape of the controller fits nicely in my hands. Including the touchpad is a nice addition. The only nag I have on the controller is the fact they have the R2 and L2 as triggers. For a fighting game, it would be more consistent if they were the same kind of button as R1/L1.If I had to rank the pads for PS4, I would put this slightly behind the HORI FC4 and well before the current FC. Definitely a solid pickup and well worth the money.

Best D-Pad for fighting games on the PS4!
This review may change over time and I usually leave 5 star reviews and comeback in a few months. The D-Pad is pretty precise, very easy quarter circles, half circles, and 360s!I'm not an analogue user but at least in windows it's slightly a bit better than a standard DS4 stick. The face buttons feel nice but the Triangle and Circle buttons are slightly raised and the R1 and R2 face buttons are lowered... This is the only pad besides the Saturn pad that I can feel the difference. It was on previous fight pads but the buttons were larger so you never really felt the spacing.I would say this is a definite buy as of March 2018, do NOT buy the first version which has the disk D-Pad...I will say that the D-Pad is better than the Hori Fighter Commander pad but only time will tell if this pad lasts, all of my original street fighter pads work as if new! While I will say the D-Pad is the best on the market as of right now, there is a chance that once the new Saturn pads are released that could easily change (if the USB version works on the PS4 that is...) will work fine on PC. The Hori pad does have larger buttons so if the buttons are too small for you I would get the hori pad, granted the Saturn pad did have small face buttons for X, Y and Z.

The "Improved Dpad" failed after 1 month of steady use.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but this thing broke after about ~120 hours of Guilty Gear: Strive. Can no longer 236 or 214."New Improved" D-Pad. Right...I realize that may be a lot of hours, but I expected a little more out of it. Going to attempt to repair it, but golly this is disappointing.

Down-back broken
I bought and stored this controller and was planning to use it as soon as my HORI Fighting Commander conks out. When it did and I finally opened this one, the down back button was not very responsive. It takes 3 to 4 tries to successfully do the tatsu-motion. This is terrible especially given how expensive this is.

Great controller when you dont wanna get the whole fightstick out
Great 6 button controller, really handy just to pull out and start playing in training mode. Good for seshs with the friends. the large d pad is good, but you may have to reach that little bit further to get to the down motion from forward. The buttons DO get a little mushy over time but still respond. Great on PC too, and the inclusion of a thumbstick is great for modern platformers, and games that dont require camera control. would have been the most perfect controller in the world if it had TWO sticks, but you cant win em all i guess!
