How do you use this? mine wont spark

Here are some ideas: 1. Scrape the black coating off. It's an anti corrosive coating to reduce and prevent rust. You won't obtain sparks while the the protectant is still over the ferrocerium. 2. IF you're using the included striker look closely on the edge. Assuming you're right handed the long end is actually an "L" shape, with a slight lip to help with scraping. should you use that scraper in your left hand you'll be on the soft side of the rod and have a very difficult time. 3. Reseve the crescent scaper for fatwood or other uses. 4. IF you're using a knife and can't get a spark then there's a 99.99% chance you don't have a 90 degree spine on the knife OR your knife is stainless steel or had a black protective coating (think K-Bar). You won't get a spark with those problems. You want a carbon steel knife. Note: Morakniv make bushcraft knives with a black coating - those work well with ferro rods. That coating is different than most and was designed to allow users to get sparks from their rods. I hope this helps. If you have to scrape off the black coating 4 it to work, why do they put the black coating on?

The black coating anti corrosive. It comes off pretty easily. It’s just an extra layer of protection until the ferro rod is first used.

Will this fit in the sheath for the benchmade bushcrafter?

I think the Bushcrafter sheath hole is too small for this thick 1/2" rod. I believe their sheath is 5/16" -- so the Überleben Zünden Trad (5/16") should do you right!! - Tim | MOL

No - for the money you get 1/2”x6” stick - the 3” sells for $18 same thickness

I have another ferro rod, It is great. But this ferro rod is even better!! It really puts out the sparks, is nice and large and should last a long time. It is all ferro rod, a wooden handle on the end would be an improvement. Overall I give this product, "top marks"

I've used quite a few fero rods before. But this one is amazing. I am so glad I went with this. Feels great in the hand, shoots massive sparks very quickly. I can light tinder from standing up using this. Amazing product. The price is definitely worth the product that you get. It's rugged and I will have this for a long time. The size of it helps my kids practice on technique because they can handle it better. Again, great product.

Works great for Starting a campfire. It's amazing how it has lots of hot splinters that come off to start a fire very quickly. Definitely worth the extra dollars, and will be taking this every time into the backcountry or where there may be a need for camping, emergency warmth, or cooking. It seems like the greater the pressure you apply the more hot embers that come off. Awesome product!
