Good idea but cheaply made.
Ordered 2 of these units and they were both broken out of the box. The fan impellers where completely broken off. The fans are very cheap quality and made of plastic. The warranty card says they will warranty parts for 20 years but everything is done through email. Returning for refund.

Works like a champ
Easily installed over an existing roof vent with minor modification to the existing vent.

One bad apple?
The overall features is what attracted me to the Rand 30W Solar Battery powered attic Fan. When I opened the box the solar panel beamed at me and I thought OK, great! Unfortunately, the fan assembly was not centered to the cowl, but worse than that (and possibly related) the drive shaft between the motor and fan was sheared off, yes broken in two. The shaft itself was made perhaps of high impact plastic...like a modern intake manifold or such. Anyway, everything was made right in terms of returns and refunds. The distributor was easy to deal with and professional...they even said keep the unit if it's too much trouble getting it back to us. They stated that they had no more in stock and we ended on friendly terms.

Works OK. Battery is the Saving Grace of this Unit. Does pull hot air out, but seems overrated at 30 W. Installation tips.
Kind of a mixed bag, but I made it work. I had previously purchased a 12 W solar powered attic fan ($200 from Costco, no they don't sell it anymore), and that one really moves the air, so I expected this one would practically suck the roof in; but don't be concerned about that. So, like others this one came with it's fan very off center, it is an aluminium fan, btw (no longer plastic as others mentioned), I was able to move it around by pushing (glove your hand) and it was less off center, but still would hit 2 of the retaining screws. I used a hacksaw to hack off the ends of the screws that it was hitting, so then the fan could move.It doesn't move near the air the 12 W one does, but it does move air. What I do like, and why this is getting 3 stars instead of 1 or 2 or just returning it, the battery does work well, and it will keep pulling air out of your attic 2-4 hours after the sun moves off your roof, nice. However, it doesn't necessarily do that according to the directions and the switch label. Before you install it, lay it out in the sun and see what settings it works on. Give it a good 30 min of sun, then bring it in and see which settings (OFF, SOLAR, RUN) it runs on. Note that you may have to move the switch further than you think, everything is cheaply made, but the saving grace is the battery. The fan does make a difference, though perhaps not quite as much as it should. I used Gorilla Duct tape to tape on ribbons on 3 sides of the unit so I could see how well it's working from the ground. Installation is not bad, and I used this clear roof sealant in a tube from Amazon to seal; no leak problems with the other one, and I doubt with this one. You do need to supply your own screws, outdoor deck screws work well.True, it doesn't come with a template, but it's about 18" in diameter, so just sketch that out on a piece of cardboard, cut and use it on the roof. A large piece of sidewalk chalk is a great roof marker to show you where to cut :-). If this was helpful, please give it a like. Thanks!

Four Stars
These Attic Fans do a great job, just wish they came with a larger roof flashing.

very poor Quality control
Received unit fairly quick to find it was defective, very poor Quality control. The fan is not centered in the housing and it is hitting one of the screws that are protruding in the housing. Sent it back for a full refund. People, don't waste your money on this!
