No One Else

A very poignant story, all created by uncomplicated drawings. I read the book three times so far, as I found more details I had missed and appreciated more each time. The resiliency, portrayed by the main characters (Charlene and Brandon) made me care and gave much hope for them. Really liked the design of the book, as well as the choice of stock and the minimal use of color, giving me an ecologically correct feeling. Glad we ordered an extra copy to give as a gift.

No One Else is a beautifully drawn and captivating family drama set in Maui, Hawaii, by the great cartoonist R. Kikuo Johnson, illustrator of some of the most memorable covers of The New Yorker in recent memory. While some of its themes (filial duty, life choices, grief) can be considered "heavy," it is not without humor and wonder, and achieves the feat of being an absolute page turner. PS: The book is exquisitely designed, with hidden treasures for those who look!

I picked this up on a few "Best of 2021" recommendations. Perhaps it was the hype leading into my read, but I found it to be just OK.The story of a dysfunctional family dealing with loss largely was told not through dialogue but rather through what was not said and thus inferred by the reader.Art style is straightforward, clean and simple. That's fine, but it doesn't distinguish itself into the "Best of" tier in my book.It's a nice story. Best of the year? No.

I was really drawn into this book. The characters were engaging, and the illustrations were really captivating. I've now bought all of R. Kikuo Johnson's books and I can't wait for the next one.

This book evokes a lot of emotions! I reflected a lot and laughed out loud a few times. Lots of great moments. Fun to recognize parts of Maui in the background. A good book to share and discuss with a friend.

Sharp, clean drawing captures a family's messy transition from one stage of life to another. Absolutely mesmerizing story telling. There are so many scenes where so much is being said without a word. Brilliant, sad, funny, and hopeful. I can't stop rereading it.

I am interested how this was a quick read, and yet the pictures add a whole wistful vibe.Was on some list for being among the best graphic novels in 2021 (Globe and Mail?).Tells a story of tension. and sadness. Well. Interesting work.

イラストレーターとしての画集ではないストーリー仕立ての物悲しさ伴う、リアリティな他に類を見ないbooks。彼の魅力にどんどんはまっていく。注文から到着まで時間がかかったが、買ってよかった。内容が不穏だから、お子様向けではないでしょう。あくまでも大人向けのビジュアルブックスだと思った方が良いですね。
