Helpful but too chatty
Some useful insights from a marketing pro, but there was quite a bit of cornstarch added as filler to make a marketable pie.

Marketing and promotion are changing all the time, from the best ways to get visibility for you and your book to maintaining an effective search engine optimized website.Continually striving to give her readers the most helpful book promotion tools possible, Carolyn Howard-Johnson has created The Frugal Book Promoter – 3rd Edition. This third edition provides authors with the latest promotional information and resources. And, it's been reorganized for easier reading. What's best about The Frugal Book Promoter – 3rd Edition is that along with well researched tools and tips, it's filled with Carolyn's own marketing experiences. This includes when her Wiki page was taken down when she was booted off of Facebook. As Carolyn is a well-known expert book promoter, these tips, insights, and warnings are invaluable. This latest edition includes everything from writing a query letter to copyright information to using QR codes to backdoor methods for getting reviews. And' there's lots on "You and the Media."Plus, there are lots and lots of samples, including sample query letters and even a sample blog entry. My favorite line in the book is in Chapter 10:"You can’t count on your publisher. Publishers focus on their next big profit maker when sales of your book dwindles."This says it all.If you're questioning the need to promote your book, even if you're traditionally published, the answer is, YES. Worth Every Penny and Then Some!
I was a bit startled by Chris's one star review, because my experience with The Frugal Book Promoter has been quite the opposite. Truly that book, as well as Ms. Howard-Johnson's companion book, Frugal Book Reviews have been my marketing bibles. Each of them is packed with so much valuable, information that do-it-yourselfers can use to acquire free publicity. Actually I refer to them constatly and have uncovedred such helpful ideas. For example, she suggests that if your college has an alumnae magazine, contact them about writing an article for them. I did just that and not only did they publish my article, Turning the Page, but they paid me a tidy sum for it. I have shared helpful advice with members of my two writing groups and have been asked to do a marketing presentation for them. The truth is, no one can market your bookas well as you, but it takes work - both effort, creativity and time. But if you are serious about not just writing your book, but getting the word out there to others, it's an essential step. So much is clearly defined in each of Ms. Howard-Johnson's books. Just read with a pen and notepad in hand and then follow through with all the valuable tips you will discover.

Take time to digest the information...
I am working slowly through the Frugal Book Promoter. The chapters are a nice size and packed with information for authors. The author does state information about working with a publicist but also shares she knows all will not have one.I am giving a non biased review of titles sent to me by Modern History Press.

A Brilliantly Presented Road Map
Carolyn Howard-Johnson's latest book, The Frugal Book Promoter 3rd edition, is a brilliantly presented road map — the kind of expert direction and guidance for which she has well-earned, award-winning recognition. The book's title says it all. It's not how much money is spent to promote one's books, but how one promotes and under what proven guidance. It's all there. I am an Amazon author who has benefited from her expertise. and will continue to do so. My copy is already dog-eared.Note: My Frugal Book Promoter (3rd edition) I received is a free review copy provided by the publisher.— Gene Cartwright.
