This was a good read - but not my favorite of the series. This book is the third in the Adventurer Series and to really understand the ongoing story the books should be read in order. This book is about the youngest Frobisher brother Caleb and one of the captives Katherine Fortescue.Caleb is the reckless brother and has volunteered to go to Freetown to gain more information on the camp/mine the missing people have been taken to. Once he finds the camp, he meets Katherine aka Kate - instantly he feels a connection with her and is determined to investigate not only the camp but Kate.Kate was a governess with a family in Freetown and was taken captive by the villains to take care of the children in the camp. She is resigned to her fate and does her best to keep the children and the other women safe and cared for. She has all but given up hope of rescue, so she is overjoyed to discover Caleb in the jungle. Kate is also drawn to Caleb - but doesn't think anything will come of it.When Caleb is captured by the villains and is forced to work in the mine - he views it as a blessing that will not only get him more information as to the workings of the mine, but will give him more access to Kate.Together Caleb and Kate develop a friendship and begin to explore a deeper connection. They are hesitant to declare any intentions because of the precarious situation they are currently in - but they both have hope that once this is behind them, they will have a future together.I really liked Caleb, he was very optimistic and was able to keep everyone's spirits up. Kate was a perfect match for him and I had no problems believing these two were in love. While Caleb is described as hedonistic in the blurb and in the previous books - he did not come across that way in this book. In fact there is a scene in this book that had me laughing at how maidenly he acted when he woke up and found himself undressed - it was very amusing to read. This book was well written and not as wordy as the previous books - the story progresses nicely and flows very well. The love scenes are warm, but sparse.I would recommend this book - but bear in mind, this book is not a stand alone title and without reading the previous books, a reader might feel confused.

Exciting, Dangerous Intrigue at its very best!!! I loved it!!!
This is book 3 in the Adventurers Quartet series -- the whole series is just WOW!!! I love Stephanie Laurens and she has absolutely outdone herself with this series. This book is just out and I can't wait for the next one. You really, really need to read this series in order because each book builds on the last. You could certainly read and enjoy this book as a stand-alone, but you would be missing such a rich background for the book!In this series, the four Frobisher brothers each undertake a successive leg of a mission for the crown. People are going missing in Free Town and nobody is taking it seriously or even looking for them. A deep rooted conspiracy is suspected and therefore, the crown can't use its normal channels for investigation because they don't know who might be involved. The crown has even sent an undercover agent to investigate and he disappeared. So, the crown enlists the Frobishers to carry out the mission. The first mission is to find out basically what is going on and as much about who is involved as possible -- then get right back to England to report that. The next mission is to try to locate the slave camp and identify any more people who are involved then get right back to England and report that. The next mission (the one covered in this book) is to locate the mine the missing people have been kidnapped to operate and the fourth book will be the rescue and final wrap-up. The whole series is suspenseful, dangerous, and of course has a wonderful love story between a wonderful hero and heroine.Captain Caleb Frobisher is the youngest of the four Frobisher brothers -- and the one who is deemed reckless and not grown up yet. Caleb wants to prove he can be responsible, so he steals his brother Robert's notebook from his leg of the mission and sets out on his own to take up the third leg of the mission -- that is the responsible non-reckless thing to do -- right.Caleb along with his good friend Captain Phillipe Lascelle and his crew find the slave traders and decide to take them out so they can't kidnap and hurt any others. Then, they set out to find the mine and learn what they can. Once they find the mine, they happen across a young boy named Diccon. Diccon cannot work the mine because of severe allergies and is therefore allowed to roam the forest to pick fruits and nuts for the prisoners to eat. Diccon provides them with much information and tells them of the people within the camp.Katherine Fortescue was kidnapped from Freetown because she is a governess and can manage the children who have been kidnapped. Katherine is a formidable advocate for those children and is the reason Diccon was allowed to collect fruit and nuts rather than being put to death. She's brave, intelligent, resourceful and beautiful -- what more could you want in a heroine. Caleb is attracted as soon as he sees her.I won't go beyond what is above in my description of the story because it would surely spoil your read. Just know that it is full of twists and turns and you rarely know what is going to happen next. I just can't wait for the next one!!!

Don't read without the next volume
When will the needs of the reader and logic win out over profit? This book is clearly but the first half of a novel, the rest of which is yet to be published. Lord of the Privateers is the second half and we can not expect it until December 2016. I am heartily sick of books being cut into pieces so we have to buy each bit separately. I have been enjoying the Adventurers Quartet. The first two are good stand alone novels - lots of romance and ongoing excitement about the overall plot of the series. Unfortunately, this third book does not stand alone. We reach the penultimate point and the book just stops. Very unfair on the reader. The book itself will make a great first half of what should be the final novel in the series. I recommend people don't buy it until the final book is out. I can only put the motive for publishing half a book down to greed. Why else would you do it?

Disappointed
I liked the preceding books from this series- but the fact that the author would leave the story of the main characters unfinished made me sad. It seems that she's falling into the same trap as many others by making readers buy the next book if they wish to know the end of the story. She's much too good a writer to need to do that, so I'm disappointed that she's chosen this strategy.

I have read all of this authors books, and would recommend this series too. I enjoyed the way the characters interplayed, and cant wait for the last book!
