Better than most
I've used a lot of different types of rat traps, and keep going back to these. They're more effective than most. Two tips: 1. Tie it down with a string so a snagged but live rat can't carry it off. 2. Screw it down to a shingle or plank -- when tripped, the inertia of the bail causes the trap to flip up which can throw the rat right off the trap before being caught. Good hunting!

Excellent trap, you can use it safely with a little bit of practice.
I am a maintenance guy, customers frequently asked me to help them with the rat issues. This is my favorite trap. It's very hard for them to lick the bait out of this and get away with a free meal. It can be hard to set, they don't usually have them available at regular hardware stores for that reason. One thing I found that helps is to pull the lever part back and then place your thumb on the letter V, your other fingers in back and squeeze very firmly. Nitrile gloves help if you are re- using it. Slowly let go, you'll see that you can hold it in place. Then you can carefully put the trip arm into position, with the bait already in place, and hold the yellow plastic bait paddle all the way up, sticking almost vertically up from the wood. While you're holding that up, put your other hand so that you are holding it on the edges of the wooden base. That way, if for some reason it wants to snap shut, your fingers will be out-of-the-way. You can then set it down with the plastic paddle up at a angle, or push it down a little bit with a long piece of skinny wood.

Incredibly effective.
Can't believe how well this product worked! These arrived 3 days ago and I have already caught 11 rats out in the barn. Freaks me out there are that many already but sooo happy I am gaining on the vermin! I had another Victor trap that did not have the larger bait pad and it didn't work at all. It just continued to trip with no kill. This 4 pack is just amazing. Big and small rats alike all receive the same quick treatment and end up dead immediately. Not pretty or fun to clean up but what about rats is fun. I wish I had bought these first as I also bought a $200.00 mouse trap that had incredible reviews and I haven't even set it up yet because these have been doing an amazing job. I check 3-4x a day and always have rats in a trap somewhere. The more you check the sooner you rid yourself of these little buggers. Only down fall is you really have to be careful where you put them and what can get to them because they will do serious damage to a cat, small dog, your hand etc. They are super powerful and no way I want to get caught under the spring.

Break when Tripped
These traps break when they are tripped. The seem like they would be heavy duty, but like other reviewers, they fly apart. And the yellow 'trip' platform is clearly not strong enough plastic.. Mine snapped making the trap unusable after the first time. The trap worked but I want to reuse them! Other reviewers mentioned some were good, some were crap. I wonder if batch of wood on some is poor quality. Trees grown fast for timber industry sometimes are too soft if they grow too fast. Could be the main reason staples are ripping out. Then if they replaced the plastic piece with metal it could be okay. I'm going to try to rig mine up to a different piece of wood and something for the trigger. Maybe a heavier base could withstand the force of the snap. Unfortunately, as they are now. They are disposable, single use item...like everything nowadays because we rely on cheap components. Even if constructed in the USA, the parts (i.e. the plastic trip platform) are fabricated in places like China. Plastics have gotten flimsier and flimsier over recent years. From organization bins and litter boxes. I have noticed a huge different in quality of an identical item bought 5 years ago versus today. Not much what we can all do about that.

Touchy
These are strong rat traps and I'm sure they would work fine if you could bait and set them without premature activation. The plastic bait tray doesn't hold the trip bar good enough and it slips easily.

Old-School Trap - works every time!
After battling a sneaky rodent in my house, I discovered that sometimes the classics are best. This rat trap did the trick when other fancy contraptions failed. Just goes to show, you can't beat a tried-and-true method. Oh, and a word from the wise: make sure you have the correct size trap. A large trap for a rat and a small trap for mice. It makes all the difference in catching these critters.
