Great book
A very enjoyable book about these two famous outlaws.Gives details of their family backgrounds, how they each turned to a life of crime, how they met up and worked together and explores how they may have met their deaths.Very detailed and well researched, considering the passage of time.A very good book - one of those books that you don't want to come to an end.

An educational and entertaining fictional read from beginning to end
The plot sort of dragged on, with side stories and characters not pertinent to the main plot. The author was very honest about the conjectures and possibilities of the facts versus fantasy. The back story of the characters was well researched and detailed for entertainment value. The book overall was well written and kept my interest thru-out. Even if it was just to see how the book ended versus the myth of Butch and Sundance.

The last outlaws
Well written, enjoyable read. Story flows well and is easy to follow. There is still no definitive answer as to how or where Butch Cassidy died but certainly Hatch gives good reasons for his belief.

This book quenched my thirst for more detailed information about Butch Cassidy.
I have always been fascinated by the whole Butch Cassidy story, so I'm not quite sure why it took me so long to buy this book. I first learned of the author when I watched the PBS documentary about Butch. The documentary was great, but it left me hungry for more information about the whole Butch Cassidy story. This book has quenched that thirst. There is so much information here that was new to me, and all of it is cited and superbly researched. This book is on my list of all-time favorites, next to Lonesome Dove, The Monkey Wrench Gang, Undaunted Courage, and Boone, by Robert Morgan. If you have an interest in Butch's story, or any interest in western history, you have to read this book.

A good attempt, but lacking something
As a huge fan of the wild west and its history, I should know by now that "historical" books about certain wild wild legends just cannot give the satisfaction of fact and truth that I seek. The mere fact that many of these characters, and all of the Wild Bunch, were criminals makes real research of their lives almost impossible. Add to this the fact that just changing your name and moving to another state would effectively make you disappear and it promises a very sketchy historical biography. I was disappointed in having to plow through too many pages about Butch's and Sundances's ancestors from generations back which I felt had little or no bearing on the character's lives. I also was a little disappointed to realize there was nothing new as far as the fate of Etta Place or even the main characters themselves. All the common rumors of their last days were reviewed but I could see nothing that was added to the historical record. All in all, I still enjoyed reading it, but in reality it seems to be impossible to find enough fact to give these books the historical meat need to be a satisfying read.
