How to Stop the Wobble
I just bought this vise and there is a lot of play because the center hole in the baseplate is quite a bit bigger than the center bolt. Remove the center bolt (15/16 socket). Go down to the hardware store and buy a $.99 steel spacer that will go around the thickest part of the center bolt. You'll probably have to settle for one doesn't quite slide on all the way, but there is a split that can be pried open a bit. You only need a spacer that is 1/2 inch high. You may have to cut a 1-inch one in half. There won't be any wobble when you put it back together. Secondly, the lock bolt that allows you to spin the vise on an angle does not have a round head under the baseplate. Even when really tight you can still move the vise a bit from side to side. Take that off and buy a thick washer the size of the channel the bolt rides in. The round washer will hold the vise in place much better than the bolt alone.

Not your grandfather's 51856 vise
I bought this product to replace an older 51856 vise that was broken in hopes that they would have interchangeable parts. almost nothing is interchangeable between this vise and the old USA craftsman vise with the same part number. the slide clearance is very wide compared to the older unit making the vise wobbly until it is tightened down. Time will tell how it holds up. Seller shipped very quickly with zero issues!

Craftsman 9-51856 6" Vise arrived on time and upon opening box found the product was defective. The swivel base was pretty loose and the jaw on one side was not screwed down completely. There was metal shavings behind the jaw i raked out and only one screw was halfway screwed in and the other screw was laying in the box. I was going to just clean it up and screw it back together but the screws were damaged and would not screw in which also made me wonder if the metal shaving were possibly from the the threaded holes where the screws went. Decided to just return the vise and get a different one I had been looking at.
