Veronese Design Isle of Lewis Chess Set Hand Painted Resin Figurine Collectible Statue (Chess Only)

Regular size chess pieces, nice heft, good enough detail! It certainly has character!

Really nice little set, came well-packaged no possibility of damage to pieces unless postal decides to play football with the box maybe. They've got a nice weight and finish. A few pieces seemed to have a fading on thin paint applied. The picture hardly captures the differences but in person it's more apparent. You can at least see two or three of the pawns are more vibrant than the rest. They're a little too small for my camera to get detailed pictures but the dark wash in the details of the pieces ranges from very dark to almost a faded gray in spots. All this is tolerable cause who's gonna be examining these with a magnifying glass besides the guy who spent almost 70 bucks on them?The big issue for me is the big brand stamped into the backside of every piece along the bottom edge. Could they really not hide these underneath if they really had to? It ruins the whole reason you bought these guys which was to appreciate the beautiful historical designs.

There are many pluses to this set. The pieces have a nice heft and are small enough to fit on a standard 14 inch board and possibly even a 12 inch. The red and white pieces are not matching sets, which I like. The original Lewis pieces are not all identical. One can see the difference in this set by comparing the queens and the rooks (warders) of the opposite sides. The pieces are fairly well detailed, and the die maker gratefully left off the pock marks that the passage of the centuries has left on the originals.However, the pawns are very much oversized for this scale, being nearly as tall as the rooks. Otherwise I'd have been tempted to rate them a 5.

This replica of the Lewis Chessmen is based on the collection found in the British Museum (my favorite exhibit there) and was a gift. The attention to detail is outstanding and the red pieces and white pieces vary slightly, presumably based on the variety of the original pieces which now reside in the museum. If you love chess, and especially the Lewis Chessmen, I highly recommend this set.
