A lot of work to do, but a great vibe
This guitar has a wonderful vibe, and is a fantastic value for the money. However, it did not come with any shielding or shielding paint, and with the P90 soapbar pickups, it had some really bad 60 cycle hum. It, of course, would have unavoidably had some, when the pickup would be switched to the neck only, or bridge only position, but this was horrible hum, even when the neck and bridge were both playing at once out of phase to cancel hum, in the middle position. So, I bought copper shield tape and shielded it with some solder and copper tape in the cavities. But, the worst feature is that, apparently, the material that the gig bag was made of, runs, or bleeds, or melds with the finish of the guitar, when it's sitting in the case. It actually seeps a black color, permanently, into the finish of the guitar, and it won't come out. It permanently stained my guitar, like a dye, into the clear coat and paint, of the guitar. Nothing that I can do about it, except refinish it.Anyway, I replaced the pickups with some Stew Mac Parsons P90 and a Kent Armstrong P90, so the tone is now decent, but the conductivity of the wood is still not as good as a Fender, etc.. Also, the bolt-on neck was shimmed with several cracked pieces of different widths (not helping sound conductivity either), and shimmed a bit incorrectly, which made the action too high for the bridge to take out all of the slack. I ground the bridge a bit under the screw-knurl cutaways, and a luthier re-shimmed the neck, and now the action is okay, but there is already some compression on the neck, due to cheap wood. These are the problems with this guitar. All in all, it's a cheap guitar with a great vibe, and once these problems are taken care of, you'll still only have a guitar with a neck that will not be as good as wood from a slow-growth forest {there is even a knot in the neck), and will not be as lively or as durable as a trusty Fender or Gibson neck. However, it plays fairly well now, and at least the frets are fairly well-placed, so the intonation can hold decent notes, howbeit, without great harmonics and luscious tri-tone, due to the cheap wood neck and body, presumedly. Still, it is a decent instrument with a wonderful vintage vibe, and I even play it on stage. It's basically a beater guitar that looks cool...not sure what to do about the case permanently staining the guitar, yet...maybe a refinish is in my future, but I love the surf green color. If you want a guitar to last a lifetime and to maximize some good pickups, look elsewhere. But, if you want a cool, beater guitar that you can take to gigs or jams and have a great time with, without having to worry about a financial disaster if it gets stolen, then buy it. Even with all of its faults, it's one of my favorite guitars, because of that great vibe, and because, once you fix all the problems with it being cheaply made, it's not a terrible guitar, and you can actually play it on a gig. You could have probably come out better, and lost less time, buying a better (Korean?) made guitar with decent pickups on it, for probably $500 or so. So, I had to fix all these problems, and now I have to buy a new case, and fix the finish, or maybe I"ll just play it stained....(tried to add a photo, but technical problems..). Still, overall, I love the vibe, and I don't know of anyone else making a guitar shaped this lately, except maybe a Gretsch, and I remember the old De Armond Jets. Anyway, be warned, but if you just want to play a guitar with a great vibe and as long as you don't mind all the work, as a labor of love, buy it.Update: I have had some great times with this guitar in some gigs recently, and it gets lots of compliments, again because of the vibe. Despite that it's a cheap piece of wood, I love it. I've had this guitar about four or five months now, and after getting my patches and eq right, and just generally getting used to this guitar, I love it. I would not change my four-star rating: it still should be shielded from the factory, or even just painted in the pickup and switch cavities with some shielding paint, but again, the price point is fantastic, and after customizing it to make it the guitar that you want, you'll probably love it, too. Worth the money, but not a real road axe...just a beater to take to local gigs and jams...but it's a playable instrument...worth the money...and the vibe: awesome...
