Excellent Exposition to the Roles of Fear and Worry in Our Lives
The book is well-organized and pinpoints the different areas of our lives that, if improperly approached and handled, can lead to high levels of fear and worry in daily life. The author, a Christian psychologist and academician, analyzes the sources of fear and worry which play an important and key part in the psychology of stress factors, especially perfectionism. He shows one how to identify and manage them so as to minimize their impact on our lives, particularly if we live in competitive societies where one is led to believe that a compulsive, perfectionistic and 'hard-driving' attitude are essential to one's survival and eventual success. Nothing could be farther from the truth than that. All in all, an easy-to-read masterful and fairly succinct work by a renowned and knowledgeable psychological expert. It is highly recommended for the perfectionistic individual who strives hard to accomplish but underachieves as well as those who find themselves unable to relax and often feel the impact of stress in performance.

How can we overcome fear and worry?
How can we overcome fear and worry? Why do you believe it? Where does it come from, and what can we do about it? Just turn on the TV, we have scads of people, places and things that not only have the potential to cause us to worry or freeze us in fear--they often do!The Author of this book makes you this promise:"Freedom from worry is possible! It requires that you practice the diligent application of God's Word in your life. This means repetitive behavior. If you fail the first time, don't give up. You may have practiced fear and worry for many years, and now you need to practice consistently the application of Scripture over a long period in order to completely establish a new, fear- and worry-free pattern." (Norman Wright)Why Heed Dr. Wright's Advice?Norman Wright is a credible authority. He has written 80 books and has counseled thousands of people. Dr. Wright, a credentialed counselor and psychologist, speaks from his in-depth experience in giving direct help to people. What you'll discover:Fear and Worry Debilitate--they prevent us from living a full life. Jesus said that He came that we might have life and have it to the full--if you're living in fear--you're believing a "spirit of fear" and ignoring the Holy Spirit. The Distinction between Rational and Irrational Fear--the author makes the distinction between rational everyday fears like fear of the dark or thunder and lightning to irrational fears. An irrational fear would be the fear of catching the Ebola virus and that fear controls everything you do and where you're willing to go, etc.The Causes and The Effects of Fear--he lays out the causes and effects of fear on our body, soul and spirit. He further separates worry and fear-worry being the internal conflict caused by our fears. For example, we fear a financial disaster and we worry about how much we have left in the checking account. We fear that we'll die of a particular disease and we may constantly worry about our health. What Happens to Our Biology When Fear Takes Hold--Dr. Wright explains, simply, what happens to our biology when we worry over a major destabilizing life event. He writes.... "Your body goes into action, sending out various hormones and other substances in its response to the trauma. This actually makes the worry "burn" itself into the brain. It really becomes attached, and your brain's physical state changes." Fear and worry become habits. This is very helpful information and gives us clues as to why we might feel the way we do.What I Appreciate About this BookThe reader will quickly grasp the meaning of rational and irrational fear. Dr. Wright clearly explains the difference between fear and worry. Although this book is not a treatise on fear and worry, the reader will have a readily available tool to begin to deal with these problems.I especially like the fact that it is a fast read, easy to understand and can be immediately applied through exercises contained in the book.In the book's concluding section, the reader will find what the bible has to say about fear and worry and how to deal with these. Dr. Wright gives his readers this advice: "Worry doesn't work, so don't do it." This is the type of advice needed today--no psychobabble, just practical, biblical and easy-to-understand information we can apply, now. As Christians, we need to know what God says about this subject and follow our instruction book, the bible. Dr. Wright's book will help us do that.Dr. Wright's book contains therapeutic exercises which help the reader looking for solutions break the pattern of fear and worry. For this reason, alone, I'd recommend the book. The exercises are designed to bring about more rational conclusions about things that cause us to become upset, fearful and worried.I see this book as helpful to both the layman and the counselor who might use it in a therapeutic treatment plan that is both practical and biblical.(Please note: Rose Publishing furnished an advanced copy of this book to me)

Freedom from Fear and Worry
Dr. H. Norman Wright’s book, "Overcoming Fear and Worry" is broken up into sections that help readers *understand* fear and worry and how to *overcome* both. It is an easy-reading book that offers practical ways to challenge and lift readers out of unhealthy and defeatist ways of thinking and behaving. The author discusses the healthy and unhealthy power of fear and the negative impact of worry, including how we view and relate to both, and what we allow or disallow. The book addresses the causes and effects of fear, and helps readers to take inventory and assess the role allowed and assigned to it. This underscores the importance of how we relate to fear and worry in regard to decision-making and the impact in both pivotal and everyday decisions in our lives. While fear can be a negative force–debilitating, paralyzing and often the cause of a life of mediocrity, the author says, “Hope is a totally different motivating force—a positive drive. Hope is like a magnet that draws you toward your goal. Hope expands your life and brings a message of possibility and change.”The author also speaks to the correlation of fear and perfectionism, and “taming the monster of what-ifs”. He clearly discusses our human capacity to analyze, identify and re-train our minds about the thoughts that form beliefs that we eventually act upon.“The fear of life is actually more debilitating than the fear of death. Fear disables. Fear shortens life. Fear cripples our relationships with others. Fear blocks our relationship with God.”Readers will learn how the roles of physiology, genetics/biochemistry and personality relate to fear and worry; and, how real or imagined fears and worry play a part in our emotional, spiritual and physical well-being.The book offers practical advice on how to rearrange destructive “what if” scenarios into potential for positive outcome “what if” scenarios; and replacement thoughts and statements. All meant to help re-align a person’s thinking with reality, logic and/or real possibility.Unhealthy fears and worry starve our potential and strangulate our freedom keeping us from living our best lives. Learn how to break patterns of fear and worry and re-focus on solutions versus problems from a biblical perspective. This book is ideal for individuals seeking freedom from the burdens created by fear and worry and as a tool for use in a group study/discussion. It would also work well as a guide or supplement for counseling situations.
