Outstanding for the price! Seems like it'll last for generations!
My wife and i have become a bit of coffee connoisseurs and we love the Espresso machine we got ascan anniversary gift, but the built in tamp is god-awful! We've been hunting for a good 52mm tamp, which is NOT easy to find, if you've searched around online, you'll see what i mean. I was a bit apprehensive about spending this much on a tamp, but after exploring all other tamper options, this seemed to be our best bet! It does not disappoint! Its hefty, solid, actual stainless steel! Not like other cheaper ones that claim to be "solidstainless steel" and then you notice shortly down the line that theyre some cheap metal, plated to look like stainless steel or chrome. This thing is so very nice! It's so well made that It reminds me of old-fashioned, well-built kitchen utensils that my Italian Great Grandparents had when i was younger! Kitchen wares that i still have and use! It actually matches our machine and other items in our kitchen. Im hoping this will last generations!Oh, and the most important part aside from the build quality of the tamp. Our espresso has been coming out consistently fantastic since weve been using it! Before this tamp, we wasted so much coffee trying to get it to come out right! So that'll save us money in the longrun. I consider this a worthy investment!

High quality, heavy tamp
I've been using a cheap "stainless steel" tamp for a long time and my espresso would always shoot out so quickly. Granted, I have a cheap espresso machine (a Hamilton Beach one), so most of the reviews say that it's normal for your espresso to come out in < 5 seconds. I thought otherwise. I decided to get this rather expensive tamper because a good tamp goes a long way, and it's almost as valuable as a good bean and good water. I didn't expect such a big difference though.First use, I probably didn't tamp it well enough because the espresso came out quick again. I learned that with my particular espresso machine I need to fill the grounds to the top otherwise it'll blow threw and it'll be sludgy when removed (i.e. not a puck.) This violates the particular gram amount of coffee, but I don't care as the machine isn't that great to begin with.Second try I used a bit more force. Also note that this tamp fits my portafilter snugly. I should note I have this Hamilton Beach 40792 Espresso & Cappuccino Maker, Black machine, so if you also have that machine and would like a new tamper, get the 51mm tamp — you won't be disappointed. Anyway, it came out much slower and it tasted stronger.Third time, I ground the beans to extra fine, packed them in, and it dripped out so slowly. It took maybe 40 seconds to fill up to 2 oz, so that was both too fine and too packed. Now, I fill the filter just above three quarters while firmly packed and it drips out slowly enough. I have yet to reach the perfect ~24 second shot pull, but I'll get there eventually. In summary, this tamp is very high quality and it has weight to it. It's a wonderful tamp and I don't think it'll ever break. I'll just need to buy a new one in the future because I'm sure my 51mm portafilter is not a standard size.

Okay tamper, shipped wrong size (bag was correctly labeled, but item was incorrect)
Ordered a 58.35 mm version-- received the ~50 mm version. Waiting for the desired tamper to arrive. Apparently, the tamper is nicely chubby, hefty and sturdy, but not smoothly finished. Chamfered edges are a little sharp (handle) and the stainless steel base is dull and only boasts a moderately acceptable level of smoothness. Why did I order it? I have VST baskets and a slightly larger tamper (58.35 mm vs 58.0 mm) is preferable. The price is okay, but if you don't need a "specialty" tool, you may do better considering a different tamper. Joefrex is probably a preferable source, but you don't get Amazon PRIME service.UPDATE:Just received the correct, 58.35 mm tamper. This tamper was much better packaged and the metal components sport a much improved finish. Tamper bottom is NOW very smooth and shiny. The tamper weighs in around 1/2 pound--nice! The heavy-duty plastic (??; a high-grade engineering resin, maybe Delrin???) handle is also much smoother and feels great in the hand. And the tamper does a great job with VST baskets. For the price, especially if you're PRIME, highly recommended.

Very nice.
I really like this tamper. The weight in the hand is nice with a good handle that fits the hand well. I fine tuned mine by buying the next size up and then having my tool room machine it down to the exact size I wanted so there is only a .010 inch edge gap and a draft so it wont get stuck.

You want to leave it out on the counter even when you're not using it because of its good looks. Totally worth the price
Perfectly balanced, weighted, and precision machined. You want to leave it out on the counter even when you're not using it because of its good looks. Totally worth the price. Great replacement to the flimsy tampers you get even with better espresso machines.

It looks like a really nice tamper
It looks like a really nice tamper, but it's the wrong size for my portafilter. I requested the 58 mm, but received what looks like a 49 mm or 50 mm size. From what I have read, it appears that I am not the first to get the wrong size.

Excellent fit for 49.6mm
Perfect fit for my La Pavoni basket and Elektra Microcasa A leva double basket. It just scrapes the sides if even slightly canted, but has enough room to polish off on the buck at the end without a single ground left on the edge. As perfect a fit as if I had had it custom made. Just be sure to tamp with a solid 90 degree elbow and straight wrist or you will mess up every puck (I spend about 30 minutes practicing with old grounds last night after receiving the item. BUt the tight fit has allowed me to get really consistent now.)

Perfect for the DeLonghi Dedica 680
I came across this in another review a d am so glad that I did. Very sturdy and well made handle. Much heavier providing consistent results for my new espresso machine. The spoon/tamp that came with the machine is hardly useful. I recommend picking up a double ended stainless spoon as well (1/2tsp) for single and double shots for consistent pulls. You may surprise yourself with your results
