cant determine what the difference is between 1004BAC and 1005BAC, basically same price. Is one a newer version? Please help.

They are two different heights...the 1005BAC is a 9 foot stand, the 1004BAC goes to 12 feet. For my purposes, I have the taller stands and really like them...they are super sturdy, I don't worry about them collapsing under a load and the 12' extension comes in handy many times. When I use them at full extension, I like to put a few sandbags on the feet to keep people from bumping into them and bringing them down...just some extra peace of mind. Is it possible to not fully extend the legs (e.i. lock the legs mid-way) so that we get a smaller footprint?

Yes, that is possible. I have done that before but I would not fully extend the mast up as you lose considerable stability if legs are not fully extended while mast is fully extended.

How wide is the footprint of the 1005 when fully extended?

Without actually measuring it, I'd guess about 2 1/2 feet.

Does this item come with a carry bag/case?

No. You will have to purchase one separately unless you buy the pack that includes multiple stands then that usually comes with one. Manfrotto does make a nice bag for it but I purchased it separately.
