Perfect Source for a History Major
Needed this book for one of my essays this semester and it was exactly what I needed. If you’re interested on the topic, it’s a great source!

Very Useful
Very good maps, with clear helpful text. If you're interested in this period and this part of the world this very helpful and useful and should be in your library.

Engagingly written by an expert
Informative, never dull; my only complaint is that it's too short! Fine illustrations by Richard Hook. Stephen Turnbull's enthusiasm for his subject shines through. Recommended.

Dessins versus texte
Toujours un plaisir de lire Stephen Turnbull, par contre les illustrations de Richard Hook sont imprécises et pas toujours de la meilleure facture.

Read "The Samuari: A Military History" before getting this book
In 1977 Stephen Turnbull wrote a book called "The Samurai: A Military History". That book covers the military history of Japan regarding the samurai from the Gempei War of 1180-1185 to the final battle of Osaka castle of 1615. If you are interested in the history of the Samurai, that should be the first book you read. The Osprey series has more or else just taken chapters out of that book and expanded on what was written in addition to adding a lot more maps and pictures. In the book "The Samurai: A Military History" the Mongol invasion chapter is about 10 pages long, the Osprey book is about 100 pages long. If you have read "The Samurai: A Military History" and want more details about the Mongol invasion of 1274 and 1281, then this book is highly recommended. If you have not read "The Samurai: A Military History", then do what you can to find that book and read it first. Used copies in good condition can be somewhat expensive, but many local libraries have copies.
