Anita Bean's Sports Nutrition for Women

BELOW BASIC
Very basic. If you have any knowledge and experience of diets, ED's and/or trying to balance nutrition for health and performance within this twisted world, look elsewhere. At least it's quick to read; took me less than an hour while sitting in A&E with a sports injury.

Hmm, I'm glad I didn't pay £15 for this one!
Good basic information, but the book is very small.I think the truth of the matter is that there's only really enough material on this topic (at least at entry level) to fill a long article, but here it's been spun out into a book. There is plenty of scope to go into more detail of course - people do degrees in this subject after all! And, with a title like "Sports Nutrition for Women", I had expected a bit more depth. However, this really is an entry level book: a primary school child would understand it. Perhaps a better title would be "Healthy Eating for Women".The book is listed as containing 144 pages, which in itself is short. However, here's even less information that this modest page tally would suggest, because each chapter begins with a full page photo. (In fact I counted 142 actual pages, not 144, and that includes 2 title pages, 2 blank pages, the page with all the ISBN stuff and 4 pages of adverts for other books in the series; perhaps the front and back covers count as "pages" too?)Also, there's nothing after page 100 - yes page 100 - other than the index and some recipes for things like ... spagetti bolognese. Now call me picky if you like, but I'd suggest that's not at the cutting edge of sports nutrition.Even as a recipe book it's bizarrely short: no photos, only the briefest of descriptions. There are 47 recipes, 2 to a page. The only sciencey "sports nutrition" bit is that there's a nutritional analysis (list) at the end of each recipe. So in summary if you're going to buy this book I'd say have a look at it in the shop first to see if it's really worth opening your wallet for.Contents:Introduction (p2-3)Chapter 1 - The nutritional needs of female athletes (p5-39)Chapter 2 - Eating disorders and disordered eating in female athletes (p41-63)Chapter 3 - Body composition and sports performance (p65 to p77)Chapter 4 - Amenorrhoea and sport (p79 to p85)Chapter 5 - Nutrition and exercise in pregnancy (p87 to p98)Chapter 6 - Recipes (p99 to p122)Resources (p128-130)Index (p131-133)
